St. Peter’s GAC Belfast 1943

T1

About a month ago we carried a wee report from a newspaper clipping on the 1943 Junior Football Championship final between Erin’s Own Cargin and a team called St. Peter’s from Belfast which St. Peter’s won. I hadn’t heard of St. Peter’s and asked if anyone knew anything about them and I was contacted by a gentleman called Brendan Wilson who had a photograph of the side and sent me this information about the team. Unfortunately the photograph is of poor quality but it was great to receive it and the following info.

Hello Paddy.

I’ve tried to scan this photo again using a different scanner, same result dark and grainy.

However i’ve managed to get some info from Gilbert Mc Ilhatton(oral).

Apparently they only played for that one year 1943.

It is believed this was a team made up from St Peters CYMS in Gilford St. Divis St, and comprised mostly of men from St Peters parish.

If that is the case the photo was most likely taken at the front of St Comgalls School, Divis St.

During the British Army occupation of Casement Park in the early seventies, all minutes of that period were destroyed.

Is mise.

Breandan.

Our thanks to Brendan for taking the time and trouble and maybe there is someone out there who remembers St. Peter’s GAC and can tell us some more about them
