All County Under 16 Hurling League – Division 1
Three early goals by Loughgiel’s Conor O’Mullan set the Shamrocks up for victory in their opening game of the Under 16 League in Cushendall on Monday evening. Playing into a strong wind Loughgiel were expected to be defending for most of the first half, but O’Mullan got his first goal inside the opening minute and had his second a couple of minutes later as he took advantage of a mix up in the Ruairi Og defence. When the corner-forward got his third it appeared that it was going to be a cricket score, but Cushendall slowly found their feet and fought back well with a series of good points, but their task seemed hopeless when half time arrived with them trailing by 3-3 to 0-8.
Most observers who had braved the bitter cold and wind to be there probably thought Loughgiel were going to run away with the game when they turned to play with the wind in the second half. However both teams struggled with the conditions and when Cushendall broke away to score two goals through Conlith McKinley they were back in the game. However Loughgiel had done enough to seal the win and they held on comfortably to seal the win.
In the other Division 1 games Rossa travelled to Ballycastle and beat the home team by 2-6 to 0-9 while Dunloy had a comfortable 4-13 to 2-4 win over Ballinascreen at Pearse Park.
In Division 2 Shane O’Neill’s Glenarm travelled to Hightown and beat St Enda’s by 2-16 to 3-2, Clooney Gaels beat Gaeil an tSeibhe Dhuibh by 5-7 to 3-8 in Ahoghill, while St Gall’s came out on top by a point over Con Magees in Glenravel on a scoreline of 4-8 to 5-4.
