With the championship up and running we have decided to resurrect the Saffron Gael Team of Week. Not an easy task at any time but with so many of the games being one sided at the weekend there was no end of forwards in contention but with only six places available a few players who staked a big claim to be on the side have missed out. The majority of the team are from the Senior Championship games but a good few from the Intermediate got the nod as well. A few have been moved around as well like Conor Johnston who was brilliant on the 40 for St John’s on Sunday who is on the edge of the square on our team while Tomas O’Ciaran of St Gall’s is at midfield, despite the fact he played in the half forward line on Sunday. Lamh Dhearg’s Paddy Joe Herron was the first choice for the goalkeeping squad after a series of brilliant saves, despite his team’s hammering by Glenariffe.
A few players were very unlucky to miss out. Players like Loughgiel’s Shea Casey, who was superb in the first half of his team’s win over Rossa, Dan O’Neill of Clooney Gaels who was brilliant against Cloughmills and Diarmuid McShane who scored 1-6 for Ballycastle in their defeat by St John’s and CJ McGourty who scored freely for St Gall’s against Gort na Móna.
