I’ve been searching for for years through old archives for this match report and found it recently when researching the Cushendall v Ballycran final meeting in 1993. On the same roll of microfilm which contained the Ballymena Guardian report of the 1993 Ulster final there was a photo of the Ulster team who beat Munster in the Railway Cup semi-final in October 1993, but the Guardian didn’t carry the match report. I new I had done the report and pics of the game in the Ballymena Chronicle at the time but when I enquired about the Chronicles of that era the lad told me bookbound copies of the paper were available but it would have to be ordered in from another library. Last week I got a call saying it had arrived and was over the moon to find the full report and pics. Im posting the page as it was then The report may not be easily read, and if not I will type it out and again and repost. I have since located the original team photos I took that day.
This was a game that always stood out for me as being right up there with Antrim’s win over Offaly in 1989 and the close run semi-final defeat by Kilkenny in 1991. During that era Antrim and Down both had very strong teams and on that day they both came together to make histroy as Ulster beat Munster for the first time ever. Sadly two weeks later they were unable to complete the task when Leinster beat them in the final by seven points, again at Casement Park, but the win over Munster is a game to remember.
