CPC and St Killian’s qualified for the semi-final of the Leonard Cup after today’s round robin section of the 4th year competition today in Armoy. The Ballycastle school set themselves up for top spot when they beat St Killian’s in the oepning game, coming out on top by two points on a scoreline of 0-8 to 1-3.
With the breeze in their favour in the first half of the fifteen minutes each way game CPC fell behind to a Daniel Kearney point from the Tower. However they hit the next five in a row with Christy McGarry and Christy McAuley leading the line with two each and half back Jack Colgan grabbing one.
Brogan O’Connor pulled on back for St Killian’s just before the break but CPC got two of the first three scores in the second half to increase the lead to four. Points from Seanie McIntosh and Padraig McKillop kept St Killian’s in touch but Christy McGarry kept his team five ahead with another pointed free. With two minutes to go a Colm McKeegan goal brought the Tower back to within two but CPC held on for the vital win
St Killian’s bounced back in their second game when they beat St Louis by 1-8 to 0-3. A first half goal by Brogan O’Connor put them in a strong position and points from Padraig McKillop frees helped them to a 1-6 to 0-2 half time lead and they held that lead during a low scoring second half to secure the two league points.
St Louis were now on the back foot and needed to beat CPC in the final game to have any chance of qualifying for next week’s semi-finals. Calum Higgins game them an early lead but CPC came back strongly and a ‘Bamba’ McAuley goal helped them to a 1-5 to 0-2 lead at the break. To their credit St Louis showed great fighting spirit in the second half and made CPC work hard for their victory but a Christy McGarry goal for the Ballycastle school killed off any hopes of a comeback.
CPC will now meet St Mary’s in next week’s semi-final with St Killian’s coming up against tournament favourites St Pat’s Maghera in the other semi.
