Sars too strong for Carey

All County Hurling League Division 2

Carey Faughs 0-9 Sarsfields 2-12

In a game played in adverse conditions Sarsfields were the superior team in a one sided game in Carey in the opening round of the All County Hurling League Division 2. In the teams’ first meeting since the 2017 Intermediate final the visitors were in command from the start and were 1-2 to no score ahead after two Kevin McKernan pointed frees and a well taken goal by Kevin Stewart. A Carey point on seven minutes from James Black, was not enough to inspire the home side as Daniel McKernan and Darragh McGuinness added further scores for the city men. A Martin Hunter point for Carey was answered by another excellent D McKernan point before two Carey points from Caolan McCaughan and James Black (65) kept the home side in touch, but a mix-up in the Carey defence allowed Niall McKenna to pick his spot for his sides second goal, to leave the half time score 2-5 to 0-5 for the “Paddies”.

The second half was of a similar nature with the visitors winning every contest over the pitch, and further points from Kevin and Daniel McKernan from frees was followed by another point from McKenna, though James Black pulled back a couple for the home side.

Carey just couldn’t get to grips with a very good Sarsfields side despite a Martin Hunter point, and Kevin McKiernan with three points and another from McKenna, left Carey with ‘no way back’. The final score on a bitterly cold day in Carey came from a line ball converted by James Black, to leave the final score 0-9 to 2-12 in favour of the city men.
