St Agnes G.A.C. Autumn 7-a-side Hurling Tournament 2019 at Woodlands 4G
This innovative tournament, initiated by Joe Compston, was run over six weeks between St John’s, Davitts, two teams from St Paul’s and two from the hosts, St Agnes’s. Every team played fifteen games, eight minutes each way over the five weeks.

On the sixth week, a finals night was held. The two St Paul’s and St Agnes’s teams each merged as one for semi-final purposes. The first semi-final drew league winners, St John’s, against the hosts, St Agnes’s. The second semi-final drawing Davitts against St Paul’s. All matches played over ten minutes each way.

In semi-final 1, St Agnes went into a three-goal lead with goals from Kevin Grieve (2) and Conor Pelan. St John’s replied with goals from Niall Mc Callin, Jude Mc Curry and Eamon Grieve to leave the sides level at half time, 3-3. In the first play of the second half Colm Mc Fall blasted an unstoppable shot to the net and despite the best efforts of Chris Fay in the Aggies net the same player scored again within minutes. There was no further scoring with the rest of the game well contested by both teams. 5-3 to St John’s
It was then the turn of Davitts v St Paul’s in the second semi-final. Davitts kept St Paul’s scoreless and progressed to the final on a score line 3-0, courtesy of goals from Alan Rainey, Christy Mc Nally and Patrick Maguire.

Although the final was well contested, St John’s ran out convincing winners, with a brace of goals from Jude Mc Curry, completing a 5-0 win. The hosts gained some consolation in the 3rd/4th playoff winning against St Paul’s on a score line of 6-1. Chris Fay, in the Aggies nets, brought off several great saves as he had done throughout the tournament while, at the other end ace marksman, Kevin Grieve, notched up four goals.

The winning captain from St John’s was presented with the shield by Roy Mc Larnon who thanked all the players and referees for their contribution over the six weeks and whilst complimenting St John’s as the inaugural winners of the tournament commented that hurling was ‘the real winner’.
