Aggies win the Berringer Shield

South Antrim GAA

Berringer Plate Final – Sunday 24th November 2019

St Agnes 4-18    St Malachy’s 1-20 (AET)

This was an exciting, absorbing, high scoring contest with a lot of good football played by both teams before a sizeable crowd at Woodlands 4G.

The men from the ‘Markets’ got off to a great start with three consecutive points before the Aggies replied with points from the two Conor’s, Gilligan and Caldwell. The Mals registered another five points to take a 0-8 to 0-2 lead. The introduction of Declan Mc Larnon and Paul Mc Clenaghan, after twenty minutes, had the desired effect. The Aggies settled and a fine goal from Cormac Mc Bride, after a great move, steadied the ship with further points from Conal Turley (2) and one apiece from Kevin Grieve and Conor Gilligan. St Malachy’s replied with a point to leave the half time score, St Agnes 1-6 St Malachy’s 0-9.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with the Mals scoring five points in a row. An astute substitution by the St Agnes management, of Roy Mc Larnon and Declan Crummey, saw the introduction of Conor Mc Lean to midfield and Ronan Carroll moved to full forward which paid handsome dividends with Ronan scoring 1-3, with the Mals replying to level the score. The Aggies pushed for home with a brace of Conal Turley frees and a Conor ‘Slim’ Mc Lean point to ease them three ahead. St Malachy’s, however, replied with three points of their own. Both teams missed frees apiece, that would have given them the win, before referee, Sean Elliott, blew for half time. St Agnes 2-12 St Malachy’s 0-18

For the third time in this thriller of a final St Malachy’s came out of the blocks quicker with a goal and two points but incredibly the Aggies replied again with four points, Cormac Mc Bride (2), Declan Mc Larnon, Conor Caldwell (1pt each) resulting in a slender one point advantage for the ‘Market’ men at half time of extra time. Alas they weren’t to score again. Points from Kevin Grieve, Conal Turley and great goals from Conor Mc Lean and Kevin Grieve; the latter the best score of the game after a terrific passing move from the black and whites which secured the win for St Agnes.
