Creggan win but Cargin are league champions

ACFL Division 1A

Creggan 3-10 Cargin 2-12

Wednesday August 14

Brendan McTaggart reports from Páirc Chiceam

Creggan and Cargin played out a hugely entertaining, gripping and powerful game of football on Wednesday night.  Goals, penalties, sub plots with O’Cahan Cup and the league on the line.  This was just the game these two teams needed coming into the Championship.

In the end, a point from Sam Maguire in the third minute of injury time proved to be decisive as the Kickhams men won the battle but it was Cargin who won the war.  The home side needed to defeat Cargin by at least ten points to leapfrog their neighbours and retain their league crown and at half time that looked a real possibility.  Kevin Madden’s side scored three goals in the opening 30 minutes to hold a seven point lead at the short whistle – Odhran McLarnon and Tiernan McAteer finding the back of the Cargin net before a penalty from the impressive Conor Small just before half time put Creggan in control.

The Erin’s Own men were a different animal in the second half however and after trailing by eight points at one stage, led by one point 11 minutes after the restart.  Paul McCann finding the back of the net before a penalty from Tomás McCann put his side in the driving seat.

The Kickham’s men dug deep however in the time that remained to stem the wave of Cargin pressure.  As the darkness fell over Páirc Chiceam the home side mustered one last attack and when the ball fell wide on the left, Sam Maguire was the coolest man on the pitch.  It was by no means a ‘gimme’ and he was under pressure but the Creggan half back floated the ball over the black spot to earn the home side a moral boosting win.

In a tight opening, Creggan had an early edge with Conor Small and Odhran McLarnon looking lively on the edge of the square.  A brace of points from Paul and Tomás McCann (free) came either side of two points from Kevin Rice and Conor Small before a Ruairi McCann ’45 gave the home side the lead in the 10th minute.

The opening goal of the contest came in the next attack though and it’s one the Cargin players won’t want to watch again.  Conor Small’s attempted free dropped short and the Cargin defence failed to clear their lines.  The ball looped to the direction of McLarnon and the Creggan forward punched the ball to the back of the net.

Cargin responded well with Tomás McCann landing his second free of the match before Kevin McShane finished a flowing move through the hands to leave two between the sides midway through the first half.  Creggan hit back with a brace from Small (one free) and while Jamie Gribben fired over soon after, Creggan were on top and making better use of the ball with the second major giving them hope of overhauling the Cargin score difference that would see them awarded the league title.  Collecting a diagonal ball on the right, Tiernan McAteer was left with two Cargin defenders in front of him and an acute angle.  It didn’t stop the Creggan man firing a ferocious shot high and to the back of John McNabb’s net in the 25th minute.

Tomás McCann’s third free of the half was the Cargin reply but Creggan had the bit between their teeth and when McLarnon was felled inside the box, the home side had a penalty in the 30th minute.  Conor Small duly obliged from the resulting spot kick to leave eight between the sides going into injury time.  Tomás McCann fired over the last score of the half from a dead ball to leave Creggan ahead 3-5 to 0-7 at the short whistle.

Creggan were full value for their half time lead and looked on the verge of pulling off mission impossible.  Cargin didn’t have the answers to unlock a tight Creggan defence but they started the second half superbly.  Tempo, aggression, intensity, the Toome side brought it all after the restart and they had Creggan under pressure from the moment Brendan Toland restarted the game.

Mick McCann split the posts for the opening point of the second half before another Tomás McCann free.  Cargin were playing with a spring in their step now and got the goal that their early second half efforts deserved.  Paul McCann starting and finishing a fine move through the heart of the Creggan defence while giving Oisin Kerr no chance with his drive.

Creggan could barely get regrouped when they conceded a penalty.  Jamie Gribben upended and Tomás McCann taking his tally to 1-5 for the evening in the 41st minute and giving his side a one point lead.

Creggan staved the wave of Cargin pressure with Eunan McAteer firing over for their first point of the second half in the 43rd minute but they more than a glimpse of goal.  McAteer side stepping two Cargin challenges before blasting the ball goal wards only for his effort to go over the bar.  A brace of Small frees followed and the home side took a two point lead into the last ten minutes.

Both sides weren’t giving an inch in the closing stages with space, time and scoring chances at a premium.  Cargin did manage to get back on terms with Ciaran Bradley and Tomás McCann (free) firing over to restore parity with two minutes remaining.  David McGuckin and Tomás McCann’s first from open play left the sides tied for the fourth time in the match and brought the prospect of extra time with the match doubling up as the semi-final of the O’Cahan Cup.

Creggan and Sam Maguire had the final say however with the Kickham’s defender scoring a superb point fitting to win any match with the last meaningful action of the game.

Some ugly scenes threatened to mar the occasion after the final whistle but when calm was restored, both sides left the field satisfied with their efforts.  Cargin take the league honours once again while Creggan will look to built on this performance going into the championship.

Tír na nÓg stuttered in the early minutes of their tie in Dunloy, conceding a point to Blanáid O’Kane and then a penalty which was well-struck by Aine Magill but saved and cleared by Ciara Devine.
Emily Falloon eventually settled her team with two fine points and from then until the break, Randalstown was the dominant team.
Niamh Martin nipped in for the first goal after ten minutes, Áine Devlin then added two more and coming into the break Aimee McAtamney forced a turn-over a few metres out and kicked over the line for an interval lead of 4-4 to 0-3.

Although McAtamney added two points within 60 seconds of the re-start, Dunloy’s defence contained them better during the second but they could not add to their interval total until Áine Magill pointed her third free a couple of minutes from time.
Cargin also scored four goals in the opening half to lead by 4-8 to 0-3 at the break against a weakened Ballycastle.
Katie McAuley scored the first in the seventh minute, with defender turned poached Eleanor Mallon getting the second at the midway point and Aileen McGoldrick (from a free) and Colleen Traynor making it four by the short whistle.
Traynor hit a double on the re-start to complete her hat-trick, with Aileen McGoldrick adding a seventh goal just after Aoife Toner had scored a goal for Ballycastle.
Meanwhile holders Loughgeil had a comfortable win over Naomh Eoin at Corrigan Park running in 5-8 to 0-1 before the break and adding 4-8 in the second half.

Cushendall get over Portglenone in opener

Antrim Senior Camogie Championship

Cushendall 1-17 Portglenone 2-10

Following a scoring blitz from Orlagh O’Hara at the end of the first half last year’s beaten finalists Cushendall looked to be home and hosed against Portglenone with a 1-11 to 1-3 lead.

However the Geraldine’s turned in an excellent second half and gave the home side a run for their money before O’Hara popped over the last two points of the game to seal victory for her team.

Portglenone had held their own fairly well over the first 20 minutes as well and led 1-3 to 0-5 with a solo goal and three points from Katie McAleese.

Cushendall however looked to be moving better as a team in that early part of the game with O’Hara a huge threat on the edge of the square and Siobhan McKillop prominent at midfield.

Katie McAleese carried the same threat as O’Hara at the other end with goalie Patricia McCarry, Una and Niamh Doherty and Eimear McKee others to step up to the mark for Portglenone particularly during the second half.

O’Hara blasted home from the 10 metres in the 21st minute and added five points before the short whistle to put her side with an eight points’ lead at the turnover.

However Louise Crozier fired home a goal 25 seconds into the second half and with Katie McAleese accurate on frees and sub Siobhan Doherty grabbing a couple of points the gap between the sides gradually closed down to two points, 2-8 to 1-13, over the opening 20 minutes of the second half.

With McAleese still converting frees they remained in touch until O’Hara finished them off with three late points to bring her personal tally for the night to 1-11.

Champions Loughgiel enter the fray next week against Portglenone, and it would be a huge surprise if the win tonight is not good enough to see Cushendall through to a semi-final, regardless of the result of the following week’s match with Loughgiel.

Cushendall : Tierna Carson, Annie Leech, Aoife McClafferty, Gemma Black, Anna McNeill, Caoimhe McNaughton, Aimee McDonnell, Brigid Delargy, Siobhan McKillop 0-2, Ellen Leech 0-1, Sinead Cosgrove, Laura McMullan 0-1, Naomi McCurry, Orlagh O’Hara 1-11, Brogan Abram 0-2.

Portglenone : Patricia McCarry, Úna Doherty, Cristin O’Kane, Nuala Kelly, Roisin Kelly, Catherine O’Kane, Maria McLarnon, Caitriona McNicholl, Eimear McKee, Niamh Doherty, Kate McAleese 1-7, Eimear Doherty, Shannon Darragh, Louise Crozier 1-1, Jane McAleese

Subs used : Siobhan Doherty 0-2, Laura McAleese.

Kelly conjures up a late comeback to deny Dunloy

Antrim Senior championship

Ballycastle 1-11 Dunloy 0-13

Ballycastle corner back Naimh Anne Donnelly solos out of defence

Maeve Kelly conjured up a bit of magic to help Ballycastle snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in Tuesday evening’s Antrim Senior Camogie Championship opener against Dunloy at Pairc MacUilin. With Dunloy leading by two points with just four minute of normal time Kelly went down with cramp after winning a free, and play was held up for over three minutes. When the free was eventually taken Caoimhe Wright went for goal but her shot was turned around the post, and when the resultant 45 was also missed things looked bleak for the home side. Things got even worse when Dunloy went back up the field and Aileen McManus sent over a free to put her team three ahead, two minutes into added time. That was that, or so it seemed, but in the next attack the ball was sent in around the Dunloy square where Kelly had been moved due to her earlier camp. However she was still fit enough to win possession and when she rounded the Dunloy defence to hammer in a brilliant goal the Town were back on terms.

Dunloys Nicole ONeill gets past the challenge of Ballycastles Bronagh McKeague.

There was still time for a winning score and after the puck-out was returned into the danger area Kelly won possession again and was foulded going through on goal. Up stepped team captain Naimh Donnelly to send the ball over the bar to seal a win that minutes earlier appeared to be beyond them.

Dunloy must be kicking themselves for letting this one slip, for they dominated the second half terratorially and were good value for their two point lead entering injury time. However they failed to put Ballycastle away, partly because of wayward shooting and partly because of the brilliance of Ballycastle goalkeeper Danielle McMichael and her full back line.

FAVOURITES

Dunloy went into the game as slight favourites but Ballycastle kept in touch during the opening half with four frees from Caoimhe Wright while at the other end Nicole O’Neill converted three placed balls and added one from play to edge her side 0-6 to 0-5 ahead at the change of ends.

Maeve Kelly and Caoimhe Wright delivered the knock-out blows with key scores, but at the back they were also pretty solid with Catherine McShane, Niamh Donnelly and Nuala Devlin standing out. Both Danielle McMichael and her opposite number Lauren Elliott pulled off brilliant saves.

In hindsight it is easy to say that Dunloy overly depended on their two scorers, but at the same time they were close to taking the spoils with Erin Traynor and Chloe Drain turning in good shifts.

Dunloy;s Kathryn Boyle is challenged by Ballycastles Maeve Kelly

There was a flurry of scores in the opening ten minutes of the second half, three more frees from Caoimhe Wright with two apiece for Nicole O’Neill and dangerous full-forward Aileen McManus and the teams were locked on 0-10 each.

Over the next 15 minutes however Dunloy edged ahead but they couldn’t quite see the game out. Maeve Kelly, who had picked up an injury at midfield, had to move into full-forward. But it was a move that paid off as she turned the game with two late plays.

Next week Ballycastle can seal a semi-final spot as group winners when they travel down to the Shaw’s Road to take on Rossa.
