McAuley goal paves the way for Cargin derby win

Senior Reserve Cup

Cargin 1-14 Creggan 0-9

A 12th minute Sean McAuley goal laid the foundations for a Cargin win as they claimed the verdict over their parish rivals Creggan in a lively reserve championship game in Toome tonight.

A clever delivery by pace laden corner forward PJ Quinn opened the door for Mc Auley to deliver the finish and send the home side to a 1-07 to 0-05 interval advantage.

Creggan, with the introduction of fresh legs in the second half battled hard but the Cargin defence stood firm, with Jamie Kennedy, Sean og Quinn and replacement Kyle Johnston leading by example. At the other end Sean O’ Neill was proving a real handful, hitting 0-7 over the hour.

Cargin opened on the positive as they played hosts to their near neighbours and close rivals Kickham’s Creggan in the second round of the reserve Cup this evening.

Central defender Jamie Kennedy open the scoring in the second minute and Sean Og O’Neill added another a couple of minutes later as the home side opened brightly.

Creggan replied when the impressive Tiernan Burke guided a 35 metre free between the posts following a foul on the high fielding Paddy McAuley.

The home side’s PJ Quinn was quick off the mark and strong in possession and when Darren Craig made delivery the former gathered before a cute ‘over the top’ delivery’ opened the way for Sean Mc Auley to find the net.

Tiernan Burke made reply at the other end when he hoisted a second white flag in the 13th minute but the home side were quick to respond and a trio of unanswered points by Sean O’ Neill, Dermot McGuckin, and Peadar McKeever ensured a  1-05 to 0-03 advantage at the end of the opening quarter and the first ‘water break’.

Creggan made the better start to the second quarter as full forward Tiernan Burke raised another white flag but Cargin made quick reply as a Darren Craig delivery found PJ Quinn and he delivered between the posts.

The visitors replied as Liam McCann guided his shot between the posts in the 28th minute but the home side had the last score of the half as Sean Og O’ Neill claimed another point as he delivered from away out on the left hand side to ensure a 1-07 to 0-05 interval lead.

The home side started the second half as they had concluded the first with a couple of early points through the impressive Sean Og O’ Neill.

Creggan replied when Liam McCann fired over at the other end but back came the home side and PJ Quinn punished a foul on Peadar McKeever as he sent the award between the posts. Cargin continued to press and Gavin Pollock combined with Dermot Mc Guckin and Mark Keegan to grab an eye catching 44th minute point.

Sean Og O’ Neill added another point to his impressive personal tally but back came the Creggan men with purpose and Dermot McCann was on hand to fire over a fine point and when Tiernan Burke added another they looked in business but the home side were not about to give further ground.

Erin’s Own launched another attack and Odhran McGuckin made an excellent catch before Peadar McKeever sent Jamie Kennedy away to raise white and the die was cast.

The Kickham’s tried to respond but the Cargin defence, with Kyle Johnston leading the way, were not to make any late concessions and a late Joe Maybin point saw them cross the line 1-14 to 0-09 ahead.

Dunloy hold on to keep their unbeaten run intact

Senior Reserve Football Shield – Group 2

Con Magees 1-13 Dunloy 2-11

A goal from Anthony Smith midway through the second half of Friday evening’s Reserve Football Shield Group 2 game proved to be  the crucial score that gave the Cuchullains victory against gallant Glenravel. After trailing for most of first half the home team were thrown a lifeline when Dave Birt fired low to the Dunloy net to cut their five point deficit back to just two at the interval. They drew level early in the new half and when they went one in front just before the ‘water break’ they appeared to hold the upper hand. When Joe Martin added a point from a free on 46 minutes to put them two ahead they appeared to be well on top, but a great break from Dunloy’s Kevin McAllister, which saw the corner forward dribble the ball along the ground for about fifty metres, saw him place substitute Anthony Smith for a really well taken goal which swung the momentum back in the visitors favour.

Dunloy looked really good early in the game and two fantastic points from Paul McNally and a goal from Daithi Cree had them 1-6 to 0-3 in front. The Cucullains appeared to be cruising but a point from Joe Martin and a late goal from Dave Birt, following a fine run by Shanlee Kerr, left the home side just two adrift the break.

Con Magees 1-4 Dunloy 1-6

Two  points in the opening minute of the second half from Dave Birt and Joe Martin brought Glenravel back on terms, and though two from substitute Anthony Smith restored the Dunloy cushion, the home team again battled back and with big Martin McCarry creating havoc on the edge of the Dunloy square were soon back on terms. Frankie Cochrane edged Dunloy back in front but McCarry was creating no end of problems for the Dunloy defence and three points without reply out the Con Magees two in front by the 37th minute.

It was then that Anthony Smith got his vital goal to put his team back ahead, and when Tuggy McGrath added a point they had a two point cushion. The home team did their best to salvage the game and Joe Martin tapped over an injury time point the gap was down to the minimum, but Dunloy the defence held firm to take the honours and keep their unbeaten run intact.

Brídíní Óga 2-9 Dunloy 3-6

Group 2

Ballycastle 1-5 Tír na nÓg 1-9

THERE were three competitive enough games in Division 2 on Thursday evening with Brídíní Óga and Dunloy finishing level in Glenravel.

The home side defended strongly in the first half against the breeze and led by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break with two scores each from Oonagh Ward and Eimhear McAleenan.

After Eimhear had extended the lead at the start of the second half, Eimear Johnston and Mary Martin broke through from two Dunloy goals inside 30 seconds and they took the game to Brídíní Óga until the second water break.

The home side finished strongly though with a goal from McAleenan and then another from Shauna Morrow looked like bagging the points until Caitlin Crawford buried a late equaliser for the Cúchulainn’s directly from a 30 metres’ free.

The other game in Group One at Ahoghill was keenly contested with the teams level at the break on 1-6 each. Noreen Graham scored the goal for the home side, while Sarah Armstrong was on the mark for Rossa.

Both free-takers, Caitriona Graham and Orlagh McCall, were prominent for their teams over the hour with Eimear Byrne’s three points putting the pressure on the locals.

In the end, despite a second goal from the always threatening Noreen Graham, Rossa pulled away for a three points’ victory.

Meanwhile in Group Two there was only one game with Tír na nÓg picking up a second victory against a Ballycastle team that had beaten Loughgiel last week.

Once again Aoife McGowan was the star for the home side with a string of saves over the hour, but she couldn’t prevent Caitlin McGaughey notching a first half goal that put the Randalstown outfit 1-5 to 0-2 ahead at the break.

A goal from Faye McIntosh midway through the second half breathed life into the McQuillan’s challenge and there was some hope for them at 1-8 to 1-4.

However Tír na nÓg tagged on points from Áine Devlin and Emily Falloon and those eased them over the line for a second win as all the teams head into a crucial week where each plays two games.

St Gall’s tops in Milltown goal-fest

Creagh Concreate Minor B Hurling Group 2

St Galls 6-10-3-07 Tir na Nog

By Kevin Herron at Milltown

St Galls and Tir na Nog served up an entertaining evening of hurling at Milltown but it was the hosts who ran out convincing winners in the end after a 6-10-3-07 win over Tir na Nog in the Minor B Hurling Championship on Thursday evening.

Both sides had registered weekend victories and headed to the Falls Road venue in confidence and it was Tir na Nog who made the perfect start inside of 60-seconds as Joshua Higgins flicked the ball into the danger area and Daniel O’Neill swopped to send the ball to the net for the Randalstown side.

St Galls hit back however with a goal of their own minutes later, Dubhaltach Wilson made the hard yards in the build-up to the goal and Joseph McCarney turned the ball home at the back post to level at a goal apiece.

Connor McKenna restored Tir na Nog’s lead with Connla McCarthy converting a free in response.

The sides would equally share the next four as McCarthy and Aodh Mullan converted frees, Joshua Higgins twice replied from the same scenario as the sides tied 1-03 apiece.

A third successive free from Higgins edged his side in front for the third time but just before the first water-break in proceedings – a second goal gave St Galls the lead once more.

Sean Murray showed a terrific burst of pace and played a low ball across the box where Niall Fallon was waiting to prod the ball to the net and make it 2-03-1-04.

A fourth converted free from Joshua Higgins narrowed the deficit to the bare minimum approaching the break, but Connla McCarthy landed a superb point after great link-up with Dara Delaney and with almost the last action of the half Sean Murray rifled home sides third to give St Galls a 3-04-1-05 lead at the break.

St Galls picked up where they left off before the break and two minutes into the second-half they were awarded a penalty as defensive duo Paul Graffin and Adam Reid felled Dubhaltach Wilson and referee Paul McDonnell awarded a penalty. Connla McCarthy made no mistake with the resulting puck and gave his side a 4-04-1-05 lead.

Dara Delaney landed a free in the aftermath with Joshua Higgins doing likewise at the other end.

McCarthy played the providers role soon after as his quick thinking released Fergus Donnelly for a score.

60-seconds later St Galls had their fifth goal of the evening, Dubhaltach Wilson saw his well taken shot parried by Dominic Martin in the Tir na Nog goal but Joseph McCarney showed quick instinct to turn the ball home for his second goal of the evening to put four goals between the sides (5-06-1-06).

Wilson popped over a point but Tir na Nog hit back as Joshua Higgins quickly taken free flew past Jack Paul Doherty and into the net.

60-seconds later and St Galls clawed the goal back as McCarney’s knock-down found Dubhaltach Wilson who picked his spot to make it 6-07-2-06.

The final goal of the evening arrived with little over ten minutes on clock, Connor McKenna scrambled the ball to the St Galls net to ensure the hosts must still remain vigilant.

Sean Murray and Wilson responded with points, whilst Higgins combined with Connor McCamphill for the visitors final score of the evening.

Aodh Mullan had the final say with a well taken point that ensured his side ran out 6-10-3-07 winners and make it back to back Championship victories to ensure they remain on the summit in Group 2.

Sponsor a seat at Corrigan Park

You will no doubt be aware of the exciting and much needed development taking place at Corrigan Park. We have worked to secure significant funding for the project which we believe will be completed by Autumn. There is a shortfall between funding secured and funding required to complete the project. We’ve therefore decided to embark on a fundraising campaign in an effort to bridge the gap, hence the ‘Sponsor a Seat in Corrigan Park’ endeavour. The cost to sponsor a seat is £200. So have a think about it. A number of different payment methods are available including cash, cheque, standing order and via ‘Clubforce’. You may wish to support this venture as a GAA club, an individual, as part of a family or friendship group, a business or other. Let us know in what name you wish your contribution to be acknowledged as the name will be included on our ‘Friends of Naomh Eoin’ plaque. (Some early contributors have asked that the name of a deceased member be used, and this will of course be facilitated). We have prepared a Flyer/Order Form and these are available at the club and also from the following club officials, so feel free to make contact and ask for a form. Thank you sincerely for your consideration…
