St Gall’s had five to spare in Reserve Cup opener

Senior Reserve Football Cup – Group 1

Gort na Móna 2-7 St Gall’s 2-12

St Gall’s got their Senior Reserve Football Cup campaign off to a winning start when they travelled up to Gort naMona on Friday evening and came away winners by 2-12 to 2-7.

Five points was the winning margin but in truth the visitors were in charge for most of this game and a late goal and a point from the homes side gave the final score a somewhat deceptive look.

Gorts started well and a well taken goal by right half forward Mark Campbell had them ahead in the third minute. Mark Hopkins opened the St Gall’s account on five minutes but Gort na Mona soon restored their goal lead when their midfielder popped over a very good point from 20 meters.

Hoever St Gall’s were starting to get on top and points in the 12th and 15th minutes from McKenna and Bradley closed the gap to a single point and they hit the front in the seventeenth minute when Mark McKenna blasted a penalty to the Gorts net. Mark Hopkins and Oran McIlhatton added points to put the visitors four clear with half time fast approaching, but a late points by Gort na Mona brought them back to within three at the short whistle.

Two quick points early in the second half by Delaney and Hopkins put five between the sides and though Gorts pulled on back through Michael Bradley midway through the half, two from Bradley and one from Chada put them in control.

To their credit the Gorts kept on battling and a late flicked goal and an injury time point from Dempsey left them just five back at the end.
