Senior Reserve Hurling Cup Group 1

Rossa 3-08-6-16 Ballycastle

From Kevin Herron at Rossa Park

Five-first half goals effectively secured victory for Ballycastle on the Shaws Road this evening as the North-Antrim outfit claimed a comprehensive 6-16-3-08 win over Rossa.

Four goals from full-forward Owen Kinney and another in-between from Cathal Connor had the visitors in cruise control at the interval.

Rossa didn’t drop the heads in the second period however and found three goals of their own through David Quinn, Padraig McGreevy and Michael Close to restore some pride-  but in truth the game was long over as a contest,

Ballycastle came flying out of the traps as early points from Cathal Connor, Lorcan Donnelly [free] and Owen Kinney put them in the ascendancy.

Lorcan Donnelly converted a 65’ and then confidently pointed from range to make it five unanswered with Cónall Shannon replying from a free for the hosts.

Ballycastle restored their five-point advantage as Ryan McCook popped the ball to Eoin Magee for a score and midway through the half the opening goal fell to the dominant visitors.

Oisin McAuley had the presence of mind to slip the ball across to Owen Kinney who duly finished to the net to make it 1-06-0-01.

Kinney struck his second goal three minutes later and points followed courtesy of Ben McQuillan and Eoin Magee.

Ballycastle were cruising and Owen Kinney grabbed his hat-trick on the 23rd minute, Sean McCleave played a high ball into the danger area and McKinney swopped to make it 3-08-0-01.

Padraig McGreevy responded with a point for Rossa but goal number four arrived four Ballycastle moments later- this time Cathal Connor hooked the ball home after Conal Colgan’s long-range free.

The goal glut continued and Ballycastle had their third in the space of three minutes and Kinney had his fourth, using to strength to control and rifle to net to make it 5-08-0-02.

Cónall Shannon received a puck-out and burst forward before claiming his second-point of the half in response, but Rossa had their work cut out at the break- trailing 5-08-0-03.

Lorcan Donnelly increased his sides lead upon the resumption but Oisin McVicker replied at the other end.

Rossa claimed their first goal on 32 minutes as David Quinn rounded Brendan Connor and flicked the ball home.

Lorcan Donnelly and Quinn traded points before Ballycastle scored goal number six. It was the fifth of the evening for Kinney after an inch-perfect pass from Ben McQuillan which allowed the full-forward to round Conal Walsh and apply the finish to make it 6-10-1-06.

Points were then traded between substitute Eamon Elliot and Cònall Shannon and likewise between Callum Campbell and Shannon [free].

Three successive points from Andrew Lofthouse, Kinney [free] and Campbell looked to have taken the wind out of Rossa’s sails but the Shaws Road side claimed a second goal. Michael Close’s free wasn’t adequately dealt with and Padraig McGreevy stabbed the loose ball home.

Lofthouse replied for Ballycastle’s final score of the evening but Rossa had the final say as McGreevy and Close reversed roles to conjure up their sides third goal in a much-improved second-half showing.
