Northern Switchgear SFC – Group 3
Erin’s Own Cargin 2-18 St James Aldergrove 0-09
Cargin secured their fourth win in group three of the 2020 Senior football championship when they proved too strong for the visiting Aldergrove at a breezy Toome on Wednesday evening.
The Toome side’s dominance in the central zone ensured they held an eight point advantage at the end of the opening quarter and the first water break.
Michael McCann raised the first white in the opening minute and with Kieran Close adding a couple before a Brendan Laverty delivery opened the way for Jamie Gribbin to make it 0-04 without reply by the 8th minute.
Further points from Sean Og O’ Neill, Kieran Close Pat Shivers and the hard grafting Paul McCann made it 0-08 to 0-00 at the first water break.
Aldergrove improved after the water break with Andy Flood and Oisin Graham leading by example and Seamus McGarry opened their account with a 17th minute converted free before Ronan Hanna split the posts to double their tally.
Cargin responded again and Jamie Gribbin claimed his second point with Ronan Gribbin moving forward to supply another a couple of minutes later.
The pace laden wing half back linked with Paul McCann and Kieran Close before finishing the move with Seamus McGarry making quick reply at the other end.
The home side were soon back on the ascendancy however and Michael McCann and Kieran Close combined to send Mark Kelly away for a 28th minute goal.
An excellent finish to conclude a well laid approach and when Sean Og O’ Neill claimed a 31st minute point the home side held a 1-12 to 0-03 lead at the break.
Aldergrove had the wind at their backs for the second half but it was Cargin’s Gerard McCann, making his return after a lengthy injury who grabbed an early point.
Aldergrove continued to battle against the odds and Ronan Hanna had no problem steering a 25 metre free between the posts in the 33rd minute and Seamus McGarry defied an acute right sided angle to send a side-line ball over the bar before adding another brace and offer his side some hope.
McGarry pointed another free as the visitors enjoyed a period of dominance but the home side were soon back in ascendancy and points from Kieran Close and David Johnston saw order restored.
Seamus McGarry pointed from a free but it was to prove the visitors last score as the Toome side emptied their bench and Michael McCann combined with his sibling Paul to score a 48th minute point and they were back in charge again.
Kieran Close punished an indiscretion on replacement Kevin McShane to fire between the posts and when David Johnston finished to the back of the net the end was in sight.
Paul McCann concluded the scoring with a 59th minute point to leave his side 2-17 to 0-09 winners and Erin’s Own can now look forward to a place in the play-offs with Aghagallon looking favourites to join them after last night’s win at St. Brigid’s.
