CORK V ANTRIM – ALL IRELAND FINAL 1943
This is an old photo I colourised of the Antrim and Cork team’s being introduced to Bishop Mageean before the start of the 1943 All Ireland final at Croke Park. I may have bent the rules a bit with the colour of the Antrim jerseys but I had a guess at what they were. I spent many hours touching up the jerseys, especially the Antrim ones. I don’t know all the players but I think the man to the left of the bishop is Antrim captain Jimmy Walsh and the player with the bandage on his nose is Danny McAlister of Glenariffe who had his nose rearanged in by Paddy Larkin in the Saffrons semi-final win over Kilkenny in Corrigan Park. Beside Danny is his Glenariffe team mate Dan McKillop, next is John Butler of Ballycastle, Jackie Bateson of Mitchel’s is next while Joe Mullan of O’Donovan Rossa is the last Antrim player in the group. You can see Christy Ring’s profile just sticking out in the middle of the Cork players while the player on the end wearing 12 was Cork’s captain Mick Kinnefick. If you know any more of the names please send them on to john.mcilwaine@yahoo.co.uk
