Dunloy cruise past Lavey challenge

Reserve Hurling League – Monday May 17

Dunloy 1-26 Lavey 1-8

Dunloy ran out comfortable winners over Lavey on Monday evening as they cruised to an 18 point win.

It was a commanding performance from the Cuchullains who hit an impressive 1-22 from play with 10 different scorers over the hour.  Padraig McGilligan top scored with 1-4 while Ryan McFarland and Barry Scott excelled at either end of the pitch for the home side.  ‘Chipper’ with 0-6 and Scott put in a commanding performance on the edge of his own square.

Lavey struggled with the fluency of the Cuchullains but managed to score the opening goal of the contest.  Odhran Waldron reaping the rewards of a delightful flick from Kelvin Gates but the Cuchullains hit back after the water break.  McGilligan’s goal coming after some delightful work by McFarland down the right hand side to carve open the Lavey defence.  Dunloy controlled the time that remained in the first half to lead by eight at the short whistle.

Dunloy continued to punish any Lavey errors in the second half with Chipper, Oisin Elliott and Liam McCann all accurate.  Shane Dooey and Kevin McQuillan added scores coming off the bench for the Cuchullains as they saw out the second half with little trouble.

Glenarm win junior League opener

Carey Faughs 4 – 9 Shane O’ Neills 2 – 17.

In a high scoring entertaining Junior league game visitors Glenarm edged out Carey at St Patrick’s Park on Sunday. The fact that the score was level on six occasions emphasis the close encounter that it was.

The Glenarm lads held a 1.9 to 2.4 at the interval with their goal coming from Daniel Black , Ciaran McGill on six points and two each from Liam Mulvenna and Con Ward.

Marksmen for the Faughs were Rory McBride and Fiachra McVeigh on 1-1 apiece with 2 points from Daniel McBride.

The second half was Deja vu and probably the crucial score was a 26th minute penalty awarded to Shane O’Neills and despatched to the net by Daniel Black.

Carey had taken an earlier lead through a fine Fiahra McVeigh goal, but with McGill in fine form aided by Scullion the visitors always looked the more composed. Carey introduced Darren McGowan and he immediately made his presence felt with a 1-4 contribution. There was nothing between the sides going into injury time but the visitors snatched it at the death with late points from Liam Mulvenna and Scullion ensured the points for the men from Feystown.

PRO’s we need your help

Those of you who have logged into the Saffron Gael over the weekend will see that we have been extremely busy and have covered a lot of games, both within the county and further afield. We had photographers and reporters in Haggardstown on Saturday for the Louth v Antrim NFL Division 4 North opener and what a game that turned out to be. On Sunday we had our photographic and reporter team in Nowlan Park while we attempted to cover as many games as possible within the county on the same day.

Credit to our hard working team for the amount of games we covered and indeed to the club PRO’s who sent us reports from the games we couldn’t cover. However there were a number of games we just could not get to and we appeal to those clubs to send us a report on their game. You still have time. It doesn’t have to be long. Your team and scorers: The other team and scorers if you know them: The half time and full time score and we will do the rest.

Here’s a useful hint. Ask the referee at your game to let you take a photograph of the team sheets before the game. (We have found our referees very supportive of the site) When the other team scores note the number if you don’t know their name and we will fill it in from the team sheet when you send it to us.

There is also a great free app for your phone called GAA Scores Stats which is simple to use and can store a world of information from the games. There will young members in every club who could operate it with ease and would be glad to help out the club.

We hope to hear from you soon and remember having your games included in the Saffron Gael is a great way to promote Gaelic games in your club. More than 10,000 readers visited the site on Sunday and that has been consistent since our leagues have been up and running.

Send your reports to john.mcilwaine@yahoo.co.uk or ptrckmclwn@yahoo.co.uk

Johnnies fall short despite second half fightback

ACFL Division One

Rossa 0-15-0-14 St Johns

Kevin Herron reports from Pairc Rossa

Colm Fleming converted a late free that undone a superb St Johns fightback on the Shaws Road as Rossa ran out 0-15-0-14 winners over their Belfast rivals.

Trailing 0-10-0-03 at the break not too many would have banked on the Corrigan men, but they rallied and took the lead late-on for only the hosts to dig in and dig out an opening day win.

Rossa made the brighter start on a sunny Belfast afternoon, Colm Fleming steered over his sides opener and Michael Armstrong then turned and directed the ball between the large posts.

St Johns hit back through a sensational point from new recruit – Darren Bellew- who joined from Lámh Dhearg in the close season, he shimmied the ball and fired over with the outside of the boot.

Michael Armstrong restored his sides two-point advantage with a fine turn and point and Colm Fleming then picked out the run of Stephen Beatty who slotted the ball over.

The hosts were playing some sensational football in the opening quarter, they increased their lead through a Colm Fleming free after Armstrong was grounded and Fleming then saw a shot bounce in front of Padraig Nugent and over the bar to give his side a 0-06-0-01 lead.

Fleming would conjure up a third successive score and fresh from turning 29 on Saturday- Thomas Morgan executed a fine score.

St Johns were without a score since the fifth minute and on the back foot until Bellew provided his second point of the half and after being introduced for the injured Sean Wilson- Paddy McBride got his angles right and pointed.

Just before the break Stephen Beatty added two further scores to his tally, the second of which came after Paddy McBride had fed Conal Quinn at the other end for a goal chance, but Conal McDonald stood tall in the Rossa goal and at the break the hosts were in control with a 0-10-0-03 lead.

Rossa increased their lead after break as Michael Armstrong fisted over – but St Johns would slowly and surely claw their way back into contention.

Back-to-back frees were converted from Ryan McNulty and Paddy McBride, before Luke Pedan offloaded into the path of McNulty who guided the ball over the bar.

Rossa responded through Morgan with an accurately angled effort that drifted inside the posts.

But St Johns were in the grove as Bellew added two further points to bring his tally 0-04 for the afternoon and Conal Quinn then split the posts after a quick passing move through the hands as three-points separated the sides approaching the final quarter.

After the second water break in proceedings Luke Pedan squeezed the ball over the bar with Bellew claiming his fifth soon after.

The Corrigan Park side then drew level on the Shaws Road, goalkeeper Padraig Nugent made his way up field and his layoff to Paddy McBride was steered over the bar to level at 0-12 apiece.

Rossa had wilted and a poor kick from goalkeeper McDonald presented St Johns with a chance to hit the front for the first time and it was dually taken through Conal Quinn.

Without a score since the 40th minute Rossa levelled through a Colm Fleming free and got their noses back in front.

Thomas Morgan held the ball up and switched to Patrick Moyes who in turn picked out Sean-Pat Donnelly who burst forward and fisted the ball over.

It appeared as though the spoils would be shared as Paddy McBride landed an impressive point for his fourth of the afternoon.

But Rossa weren’t for settling for a point and instead pushed for the late winner and were rewarded when referee Darren McKeown awarded them a late free in the dying embers.

Colm Fleming stood over the ball and under pressure converted with the game’s final opportunity as Rossa claimed a 0-15-0-14 victory.
