McMullans steer the Shamrocks to another win

Loughgiel added another win to their tally this season when they beat visitors Portaferry by seventeen points at Fr Healy Park on Sunday. The Shamrocks were on top from the start against the understrength visitors and with the the McMullan’s controlling matters they won with a bit to spare.

Loughgiel’s manoeuvring was set in motion with a quick start which resulted in a quick point by Callum McKendry. Loughgiel were on top thanks to the efforts of Shane O’Boyle and Cathal McMullan, but Portaferry’s Padraig Doran brought the fight to the home side with a constant delivery of points. Rian McMullan worked extremely hard alongside Shan McGrath and they were causing the Portaferry’s defensive line of Emmett O’Neill, Tom Murray and Ciaran Savage a lot of problems. Connor O’Prey and Connor O’Neill played well consistently, but very few could stand in Cathal McMullan’s way.

By the first water break, Loughgiel were ahead by two points, but scores from Rian McMullan and Cormac McFadden widened the score difference. Before half time, Ronan McCloskey paced down the field and passed the ball to Christy McGarry who scored a brilliant point, which helped them open a 0-11 to 0-6 lead by half time.

Conor Mageean opened the second half with a point, but his work was outdone by a goal by Rian McMullan who finished a move by Cormac McFadden and Christy McGarry by drilling the ball home. Connor O’Prey and Darragh Mallon continued to try to turn the tide, but points by Paul Boyle and Rian McMullan helped push the home side 1-15 to 0-9 ahead by the second water break. The Shamrocks were well on top at this stage and a goal by Shan McGrath helped secure the victory for Loughgiel. Conor Mageean and Conor O’Neill did not give up however and continued to play on with intensity for the remainder of the match. After playing a great second half, Donal McKinley scored one final point for Loughgiel to secure a red and white victory with a total score of 2-21 to 0-10.
