Cushendall move to top of the table

Under 16 Camogie League – Division 1

Cushendall 3-14 Loughgiel 3-3

Cushendall moved to the top of the Division 1 table when they beat their nearest rivals Loughgiel in Monday evening’s opening game of Phase 2 of the Under 16 Camogie League at Pairc Mhuir.

Despite getting away to a dream start, which saw them dominate the opening quarter, Cushendall were made to work hard to keep their noses in front at half time. When Loughgiel took the lead early in the second half they appeared to be in a good position but Cushendall steadied the ship again and dominated the rest of the game to win convincingly in the end.

Ellie Joe Butler and Orlaith McAlister opened the scoring for Cushendall before Meadhbh Graham grabbed her team’s opening goal on five minutes. When McAlister got her second point of the game the home team were six clear, but Ciara Connolly got Loughgiel up and running with a goal in the 22nd minute. Connolly added a point to cut the gap to just two, though Meadhbh Graham pulled one back for the home team to put them three clear. Corner forward Eimear McKinley brought Loughgiel level with a goal five minutes from half time, though Ellie Joe Butler popped over a point just before the break to give Cushendall a one point lead at the interval.

The second half saw Loughgiel hit the front inside four minute, and after Anna McKillop drew them level the excellent Ciara Connolly got her team’s third goal to pull them three head. The Shamrocks appeared to be in a strong position at this stage, but they would only score one more point in the final 27 minutes of the game as Cushendall hit back with a vengeance.

Four points in a row from Niamh McNeill, Orlaith McAlister, Ellie Joe Butler and McAlister again put them back in front, and thought Anna McKillop pointed for Loughgiel to level up the scores Cushendall pushed for home, hitting the last seven scores of the game, two of them goals from Orlaith McAlister and Orla Kane to run out convincing winners.

All County League Football Fixtures & Previews

 (Wed 24th June)

Another full list of fixtures, in the mid-week slot on Wednesday the 24th June.

The competition has neared the home straight with just a trio of fixtures remaining following this round and it is due to complete on Wed 7th July.

Division One (all games at 7.45pm)

Casement’s Portglenone v St Enda’s Glengormley

The Bannsider’s have had a good programme to date and they only remain three points in arrears of the pace setters despite having to proceed without county personnel.

They recorded a good win over the visiting Rossa last time and they will look forward to the arrival of St Enda’s this time.

St Enda’s have a couple of victories to date and although the Glengormley men will not lack in ambition they will do well to get anything from this one.

O’ Donovan Rossa v St Gall’s

Having led the pack for a good portion of the league Rossa have struggled in their last two fixtures, and a couple of reversals has seen the Shaw’s road side slip down the ratings.

Hugh Mc Gettigan’s charges lost their penultimate assignment up at Hightown and they failed to cope with Casement’s at Kelly Park last time.

St Gall’s have mixed the good with the mediocre in the league but they were at their best last time recording an impressive victory over the visiting Ahoghill.

Padraig O Muiri’s charges visit former pace setters Rossa in this one, and they may struggle to gain a positive return on the Shaw’s road.

St Mary’s Ahoghill v St Mary’s Aghagallon

St Mary’s Ahoghill have not recorded a win to date and the dual club will look for better in this one as they welcome Aghagallon to Cloney.

The home side may well have one eye firmly fixed on hurling affairs but character is never in doubt within the ranks and they may well look at this fixture as an opportunity to open account.

Aghagallon have struggled for consistency in their campaign and having allowed a healthy advantage over the visiting Lamh Dhearg to slip away last time they may well find the going tough in this one.

Lamh Dhearg v Gort Na Mona

Lamh Dhearg staged a late comeback last time to gain a win at Aghagallon which looked unlikely at one stage.

Mairtin Lynch’s men are in competition without their ‘county players’ and such reflects on their campaign to date.

Gort Na Mona have recorded a couple of positive returns this year and the West Belfast men will travel to Hannahstown in search of another couple of points.

Erin’s Own Cargin v St Brigid’s

This one may well have a bearing on the destination of the league title and the Eddie Fitzsimmons Memorial trophy as pace setters Cargin play hosts to third placed St Brigid’s who are just a couple of points in arrears.

Damien Cassidy’s charges have fielded without their county players but their record to date would suggest another win.

St Brigid’s have been good in their campaign but they lost to the visiting Creggan last time and home advantage may well tilt the balance in favour of the Toome men.

Kickham’s Creggan v St John’s

Creggan remain in close pursuit of their near neighbours and close rivals Cargin in search of the league title and just a single point in arrears of the Toome men.

Gerard M.C. Nullity’s charges got a great result last time out at St. Brigid’s and with home advantage they will fancy their chances in this one

St John’s are four points in arrears of the top four but this looks a tough assignment for the Corrigan side and a home win and another brace of points for the Kickham’s men looks probable.

Division Two (all games at 7.45pm

Patrick Sarsfield’s v Kickham’s Ardoyne

Sarsfield’s have struggled to get it together this year and have not collected a single point to date and they will hope for better as they play hosts to Ardoyne.

The current Junior champions have former Down great Ross Carr at the helm and have shown steady progress this year and they may well collect another couple of points in this one.

St Paul’s v Cuchullian’s Dunloy

Dunloy have struggled this year without their county players and have failed to put points on the board and they will hope for better as they travel to Shaw’s road. The Cuchullian’s may well travel in hope rather than in any confidence.

St Paul’s have just a couple of wins to date but they are capable of better as a recent draw with All Saint’s would suggest and in such mood they may well pick up another brace of points from this one.

All Saint’s Ballymena v St Joseph’s Glenavy

Having lost out in their opening game of the season to the visiting Randalstown men All Saint’s have taken a firm grip on the baton and continued unbeaten since.

They recorded a victory at Dunloy last time and they will return to Quinn Park awaiting the visit of Glenavy.

St Joseph’s Glenavy are certainly capable of better as a recent draw at Glenravel suggests but this does look a stern test for the Chapel Hill residents and All Saints can extend that unbeaten run.

Michael Davitt’s v St James Aldergrove

Michael Davitt’s got off to a bad start this term have shown marked improvement lately.

They recorded an excellent win at Glenavy last time to follow a home win over the visiting Dunloy and they will look forward to the visit of Aldergrove.

The Crumlin men have been a bit inconsistent this term but they are more than capable and will travel up to Belfast in search of the points but this one could go either way.

Con Magees Glenravel v St Ergnat’s Moneyglass

The reigning Intermediate champions Moneyglass failed to cope with the visiting Tir na nOg last time and will travel down to Glenravel intent on getting back to winning ways.

The St Ergnat’s men are four points in arrears of the pace setters and they will travel to Maginn Park in search of points to close the gap on the leaders.

Glenravel sit in 5th place at present and a win would move them into the top four but a draw looks possible in this one.

Tir na nOg Randalstown v St Teresa’s

Tir na nOg remain unbeaten to date return and sit three points ahead of second paced All Saint’s they are in touching distance of a place in the play-offs.

The Whitehill side recorded a massive result with their win at Moneyglass last time and they will hope to continue that form from the visit of St Teresa’s

The Glen road side are certainly more than capable as their win over Ardoyne last time suggests but they will have to be at their best to get anything from this one.

Division Three (all games at 7.45pm

St Agnes v St Mary’s Rasharkin

St Mary’s Rasharkin put a couple of bad results behind them with a win over O’Donnell’s last time out and promotion still remains within their reach as they visit the Aggies but they will not get it all their own way against a St. Agnes side who have been performing well this year.

Cardinal O’ Donnell’s v St Malachy’s

Having started the season on a positive note O’ Donnell’s have lost their way somewhat of late but they may take this opportunity to regain winning ways as St. Malachy’s visit McCrory Park.

Patrick Pearses v St Patrick’s Lisburn

St Patrick’s Lisburn remain just a couple of points in arrears of the top place and they may well take another couple of points from this visit to North Belfast based Pearses.

St Comgall’s Antrim v Mc Quillan’s Ballycastle

St Comgall’s lead the way in the Division and Adrian Dougan’s charges should gain another couple of points from the visit of McQuillan’s, Ballycastle.

Eire Og v Laochra Loch Lao

Both sides have just one point in this year’s league campaign so something has to give here and Eire Og will be favourites to gain a win in this one but it could go either way.

Sarsfields snatch late victory in Cushendall

Under 17 Hurling League – Division 1

Cushendall 1-12 Sarsfields 1-13

A goal in the last seconds by substitute Emmet Fraser gave Sarsfields victory over Cushendall in Sunday’s U17 Hurling League game at Pairc Mhuir, Cushendall. When midfielder Joshua Schnell sent over a point from play four minutes from the end of normal time it appeared the Ruairis had done enough to seal the win, but Sarsfields never gave up the fight, and their efforts were rewarded when Fraser grabbed a goal with practically the last puc of the game.

There was little between the sides during the first half but when Joshua Schnell hit two points in a row midway through the half Cushendall were 0-9 to 0-5 ahead. However Sarsfields finished the half with five points on the trot from Enda McCartan (2), Anthony McGarrigle (2) and Brendan Jackson to lead by 0-10 to 0-9 at half time.

It was score for score for much of the second half asJoseph McNaughton, Callagh Mooney, Joseph McLaughlin and Josh Schnell found the target for Cushendall while Enda McCartan (2), Andrew McStay and Emmet Fraser answered for the Paddies. When Schnell sent one over with just five minutes left for play it appeared the home side had done enough, but Frasers late strike pulled the rug from under them and sent Sarsfields home with both league points.

Good win for Emmet’s in Dungannon

Antrim Hurling League Division 2

Eoghan Ruadh Dungannon 0-11 Cushendun Emmet’s 2-25

Cushendun Emmet’s made the long journey to Dungannon on Sunday a rewarding one when they came away with both league points after a comprehensive win. Ahead from the early stages the men from the Glens were always in control of the game and went in at half time seven to the good. A good start to the second half saw them stretch that advantage to eleven and from that position they were never going to lose.

Conor McHugh, Conlaoith McNeill and James Morgan got the first three points of the game, and though the Tyrone men came back with a point from full-forward Ciaran McCrudden, Conor McHugh soon restored the Emmet’s three point cushion. The home team closed the gap to two in the 11th minute when Cathal McErlean pointed, but four in a row from David Kilgore, James Morgan, Conor Bannon and Harry Kilgore gave Cushendun a firm grip of the game by the first half water break.

There was little between the two sides during the second quarter and in fact Eoghan Ruadh cut the gap back to five, but a goal from ‘Loaf’ McNeill and a James Morgan point put the Emmet’s ten ahead by half time. (1-13 to 0-6)

If there were any doubts that the ten point lead wouldn’t be enough they were soon dispelled as the Emmet’s flew from the traps at the start of the second half and three points from Loaf and one from Calum Kilgore stretched that lead to 14 in the first five minutes. From this stage on the only thing in question was the size of the winning margin. Substitute Conrad McDonnell made an immediate impression with four points from play and Calum Ryan grabbed his team’s second goal late in the game to put the seal on an impressive win.

Shamrocks show their strength in depth with big win in Reserve League

Rossa 0-07 Loughgiel 6-16

By Darach O’Mullan

Loughgiel and Rossa met under the scorching sun at Rossa Park on Sunday afternoon in the Senior Reserve League, in a game where the Shamrocks showed the depth of talent in the club.

The match started off in Rossa’s favour as two points were scored by Conor Rocks, but the tide was quickly turned by points by Connall Kerr and Nicholas McNaughton and a superb goal by John Francis Connolly. A slick pass from Michael McGarry to Conall McCloskey sent him in for a second goal and the Shamrock fans didn’t have to wait too long for the third as Nicholas McNaughton fired home to leave the score at the first water break 3-6 to 0-2.

Rossa’s Michael Murray attempted to turn the tide again with a point, but his efforts were cast aside as Paul Boyle scored two consecutive points and Aodhan McFadden followed with another excellent point. Conor Rocks and Aidan Aicken continued to push for Rossa’s resurrection, but young Damian Quinn once more eased Loughgiel further ahead and by half time the Shamrocks were 4-12 to 0-04 clear.

Rossa began the second half with a stronger presence and this amounted to a point by Michael Close. However Rossa’s defence was put under great pressure as Loughgiel’s John Francis Connolly continued to press forward and with Michael McGarry providing great assistance, and victory was consequently cemented by a final two goals delivered by Connolly and McNaughton.
