Down proved too strong for Antrim in an entertaining game in the Gaelic Masters competition in Portglenone on Saturday. The Saffrons matched the visitors during the early exchanges and indeed lead 0-3 to 0-1 at the first water break with Micky Donnelly and S McKenna edging them in front before keeper, Sean McGreevey converted a ‘45’.
Down began to make their presence felt during the second quarter and a goal from Johnny Burns in the 22nd minute sent them on their way to a 1-8 to 0-5 lead as their superior fitness began to tell.
After the break ther Mourne side continued to enjoy the better of the exchanges and goals from John Haughey and Tom McMahon killed off the Antrim challenge though Brian White’s side never gave up the fight.
