Loughgiel edge out Ballycastle in hard fought contest

Antrim Senior Camogie Championship  – Round robin 2

Ballycastle 0-10 Loughgiel 1-11

Loughgiel made it two wins out of two in the Senior Camogie Championship when they travelled to Pairc MacUilin on Saturday and beat Ballycastle by four points in a bruising contest.

When they led by 1-4 to 0-1 at the first water break, and by 1-6 to 0-2 after 23 minutes it all seemed to be plain sailing for the county champions, but Ballycastle fought their way back into the game and the Shamrocks had to dig deep to keep them at bay.

It all seemed so simple for Loughgiel in the opening quarter as Caitrin Dobbin and Roisin McCormick led the charge, Dobbin hitting 1-2 and McCormick 0-2 as they raced to a 1-4 to 0-1 lead at the first water break, the Ballycastle point coming from a Caoimhe Wright free.

Annie Lynn increased the Loughgiel lead just after the water break but three points from Caoimhe Wright in reply to two from Roisin McCormick and Caitrin Dobbin left Loughgiel ahead by 1-7 to 0-4 at half time.

Ballycastle’s Bronagh McCaughan in action against Loughgiel’s Emma McFadden.

Emma McMullan put Loughgiel seven clear when she pointed in the opening minute of the second half, but Loughgiel would only get three more points in the remaining 32 minutes as the home side slowly clawed their way back into the game. Nuala Devlin started the comeback when she broke through and fired over the bar with a goal at her mercy, and when Maeve Kelly added a point the gap was down to five. The ever dangerous Caitrin Dobbin replied for the Shamrocks to put the gap out to six, and player of the match Lucia McNaughton did the same after Caoimhe Wright had pointed from a free, but Maeve Kelly came back with a point just before the second half water break to cut the gap back to five.

An excellent point from play by Caoimhe Wright left just four between the side on 47 minutes, though they had plenty of possession that was as close as Ballycastle would get as their defence held on to make it two wins out of two to keep their place at the top of the table.
