Under 15 Hurling Championship final
Oisins 4-16 Loughgiel 3-3
Oisins completed what has been a remarkable season, which saw them win six trophies, when they beat Loughgiel in Saturday morning’s final of the Under 15 Hurling Championship at Cushendun.
The Oisins trailed for a good part of the opening half after a great start by Loughgiel. However they slowly but surely got to grips with their opponents and a strong finish to the opening half saw them score 3-2 in last five minutes to lead by 4-7 to 3-1 at the interval.
After the change of ends it was all Glenariffe, and though they did not score as freely as in the first half they were always in control as they added the Championship Cup to the League, McMullan Cup, County Feile, All Ireland Feile and last year’s Under 14 final which was held over to this year.
Phelim Ward pointed Glenariffe ahead from a free after two minutes but two minutes later Loughgiel were ahead when corner forward Conn McCormick pounced on a breaking ball to drill his shot left sided to the Oisins net. Three minutes later the Shamrocks struck again when a long delivery from Liam Glackin came back off the upright and Roan McGarry collected to fire home and put his team 2-0 to 0-1 in front. To their credit the Oisins never panicked and between then and the first half water break Orrin O’Connor, Michael Furey and Phelim Ward picked off points to trail by just two.
The gap was down to just one on 16 minutes when Orrin O’Connor split the Loughgiel uprights and they were back in from on 19 minutes when the excellent Phelim Ward drove a ball to the Shamrocks net in the 19th minute. Loughgiel were soon back in front however and after Liam Glacking pointed a 65 to cut the gap back to one, Roan McGarry pounced again to fire home his team’s third goal and put them two ahead by the 24th minute. There was a real buzz in the crowd as an upset appeared to be on the cards, but Glenariffe produced a storming finish to the half with two goals from Michael Furey, plus 1-2 from Phelim Ward to lead by 4-7 to 1-3 at half time.
With the breeze behind them in the second half Glenariffe soon increased their lead, but they were strangely lethargic, but they did manage to stretch their lead to twelve before Roan McGarry pulled on back for Loughgiel. As is so often the case the water break proved a momentum change and the final quarter saw the Oisins back in control and they added six without reply, three from Ward, plus one each from Orrin O’Connor, Calum McIlwaine and Michael Furey to wrap it all up.
