Brilliant effort by St Killian’s comes up short

St Conor’s 4-2 St Killian’s 2-7

St Killian’s bid for glory in the Under 16 1/2 Football title came up just short at Meadowbank Magherafelt on Friday as St Conor’s held on to take the title. A late surge by the Garron Tower girls saw Clodagh McPeake score a goal and two points to close the gap to a single point.

St Conor’s Playing into a strong breeze Clodagh McPeake got proceedings underway with a 3rd minute free. Although dominating possession The Tower girls were hit a double blow just before the first water break after conceding 2 goals in the space of 1 minute. In the 2nd quarter both teams cancelled each other out. An excellent Aisling Mulholland point from distance into the wind closed the gap and the half time score was St Conors 2-1 St Killian’s 0-2.

The 2nd half saw a more determined effort from the Glens girls. Two Clodagh McPeake frees on the 2nd & 8th minute were cancelled out by St Conors goals in the 3rd & 16th minutes plus a St Conors point to leave 10 points the gap as we headed into the last 10 mins.

What a last ten minutes we had. Aisling Mulholland raised a green flag from close distance to narrow the lead to 7 before Erin McNaughton pointed to bring the game to within two scores. St Killian’s put on a lot of pressure and Clodagh McPeake converted points in 25th & 26th minutes to narrow the gap to 4 points. When McPeake raised a green flag with two mins to go, all momentum was with the Tower but time running out St Conors held on for a narrow victory in a scoreline of St Killian’s 2-7 St Conors 4-2.
