Moloney stars as Wolf Tones get their first win

Antrim Football League Division 3

Wolfe Tones 2-8 St Agnes 1-6

A second half Aodhan Moloney masterclass stole the show at The Valley on Sunday as Wolfe Tones got their first league points of the season against Naomh Úna.

Moloney opened the scoring early in the first half but the Andersonstown men responded well with a slew of points and a goal which dipped in over the head of Tones keeper Danny McIvor, but a goal at the end of the first period kept the Greencastle outfit in the tie with Aggie’s leading 1-4 1-2 at the break.

Aggies stretched their lead to four points in the second period before Wolfe Tones got into gear and managed to claw themselves back to within a point before Moloney was brought down in front of goal. Converting the subsequent penalty, Wolfe Tones never looked backed and scores from Matt McCann, Jonah Magill, Kevin McCallion, and Gerard McDonnell ensured that Wolfe Tones got their first win in the All-County leagues since the 1960s.

The attitude from Wolfe Tones showed a marked improvement from previous weeks and indeed the tail end of last season where a depleted squad fell to a heavy defeat to Aggie’s South Antrim team at Woodlands. The management team picked out Jonah Magill’s attitude as having come on leaps and bounds in recent week and the work rate of Declan Moloney who, at just 19, gave a commanding performance around the middle of the park, from centre half back with brother Kieran also putting in the hard yards. Despite the first half mishap, young Danny McIvor put in a good shift in nets with pinpoint kick-outs and a number of vital saves to keep Tones in the game at the point where it could have gone either way.

The game also saw a Wolfe Tones debut for Cillian Cumiskey, son of manager Gavin, and a recent arrival from St Paul’s Holywood and the younger Cumiskey showed some of the flair that, 25 years ago this week, pocketed his father his first of three All Ireland Club medals.
