Brigid’s have too much firepower for battling Gorts

LGFA Division 1

Gort na Mona 0-5  St. Brigid’s 4-12

A very young and talented Gort na Mona side gave it everything at Enright Park on Monday night but had to concede to a much more experienced and very skilful St. Brigid’s in the Antrim County league.

Mary Mitchell led the St. Brigid’s charge and goals from the full-forward early in both halves put the Musgrave Park girls firmly on the front foot and they never looked back despite a sustained effort from the home side.

Mitchell had a useful ally in Laura Agnew who struck with a second St. Brigid’s goal before half time to send the visitors into a 2-6 to 0-2 half time lead but they had to thank keeper Julie Curran who pulled off a superb save to deny Blaithin Ni Cathail.

Mary Mitchell 0-3, Laura Agnew, Cora Leonard and Eve Finnegan completed the St. Brigid’s first half scoring while Duailtin Ni Cathail and Ciara Maguire shared the points for a Gort na Mona side who lost Tiernagh Elley following a clash of heads just before the break.

The visitors continued to take the game to the opposition in the second half and Mary Mitchell fired home their third goal to extend their lead with Laura Agnew continuing to impress with some excellent points and Cora Leonard also on target.

The youthful home side were displaying a lot of character and never gave up the battle despite the odds and were rewarded when the excellent Blaithin Ni Cathail opened their account with a fine point and they were then denied a goal as Julie Curran came to St. Brigid’s rescue for the second time.

St. Brigid’s reasserted their dominance however as Nora Graham got in for their fourth goal and then it was the turn of Aisling McCaffery in the Gort na Mona goals to deny the visitors with a good save.

The visitors had matters tied up at this stage but the young Gorts kept going to the end and had some success with Ciara Maguire pointing two frees and Curran in the St. Brigid’s goals pulling off another fine save to ensure a clean sheet for the evening.
