Homefit Antrim Football League – Division 3
St Agnes 1-8 St Patrick’s Lisburn 1-14
Naomh Padraig took advantage of St Comgall’s dropping a point against O’Donnell’s to move to the top of the league table with a win over St Agnes at Woodlands on Sunday.
The Aggies were first to strike when corner forward Ronan Carroll pointed them ahead in the opening minute but Eoin Dixon brought Lisburn level with a pointed free and a Ben McMullan goal on seven minutes gave them the upper hand. However the Aggies fought back to hit four of the next five points, two of them from Carroll and two from centre forward Cormac McBride to tie things up at 0-5 to 1-2, though an Eoin Dixon point gave St Patrick;s a slender advantage at the break.
The Lisburn side started the second half strongly and points from Oisin Gorman, Ben McMullan and Eoin Dixon increased their lead to four inside for the first six minutes. Ronan Carroll closed the gap to four, and when Conor Dixon received a black card for the visitors it was game on once again. St Agnes took advantage of having the extra man when right half forward Paul McClenaghan fired home a goal to bring his team level.
To their credit the league leaders responded well and five on the trot from Paul Law (2), Eoin Dixon, Paddy Craig, the restored Conor Dixon and Tighearnan O’Meallaigh to go six clear with just five to play. The Aggies kept plugging to the very end and despite losing a player to a black card, they hit the last two points of the game through Carroll and corner-back Dylan Cunningham to leave just four in it at the end.
The action continues in the great Division 3 race on Wednesday evening when St Patrick’s host St Malachy’s, second placed St Comgall’s have a home tie against Wolfe Tones at Dunsilly, while O’Donnell’s travel ‘up the slope’ to take on Eire Og at Woodlands.
