Logan and Duffin power Tir na nOg to victory

Tir na nOg 2-18 Carryduff 2-12

The twin threat of Ciaran Logan and Sean Duffin proved too much for a battling Carryduff as they lost by six to a strong Tir na nOg at Whitehill today. The home side looked to be in a strong position when they led 0-12 to 0-5 at the halfway stage but the Down men staged an early second half comeback to lead briefly by the 6th minute.

Tir na nOg made a strong recovery and the introduction of Eamon Og McAllister and Caoimhin Duffin settled them with Ciaran Logan and Sean Duffin scoring second half goals to send them on their way to a second win in three outings this season.

The early exchanges were fairly even with Ciaran Logan striking a couple of early points for the Randalstown side and the impressive Gareth Lynch replying with three for the visitors to edge them ahead after 10 minutes.

Logan brought the side’s level and a point from a Sean Duffin free and two from play by Niall Devlin saw the Whitehill men three in front by the 17th minute. Devlin’s second came when he was first to react after the ball rebounded of an upright.

Ciaran Logan fires home Tir na nOg’s opening goal

Tir na nOg were starting to take control as the free taking of Sean Duffin saw them move further ahead with the big number15 converting two long range efforts and a ‘65’ to move them six clear by the 21st minute.

Duffin added another from play and Ciaran Logan added a couple of excellent points with Donal Rooney from 70 meters and Gareth Lynch replying for the Down men to leave it 0-12 to 0-5 in favour of the home side at the break.

The home side looked comfortable as they turned to face a slight breeze at the start of the second half but it was Carryduff who made a blistering start as they hit an unanswered 1-5 in the opening six minutes to take the lead and the home side looked in trouble.

Conor McAlister, Darragh Goodwin, Sean O’Callaghan, and Donal Rooney struck quick-fire points and then a long delivery by Rooney from mid-field deceived Christy Sheerin in the Tir na nOg goals and ended in the net.

The momentum was very much with Carryduff as Gareth Lynch edged them ahead for the second time in the game and we looked to be in for an upset but the Tir na nOg management took remedial action with Eamon Og McAllister and Caoimhin Duffin introduced to the action.

Sean Duffin goals from close range to put Tir na nog in control

Eamon Og levelled matters with his first touch of the sliotar and then set up Ciaran Logan for a goal in the 11th minute and the momentum was very much back with the Randalstown side.

McAllister, and Sean Duffin added points as Tir na nOg began to dominate again and when Duffin fired home his side’s second goal in the 16th minute it looked a long way back for the Down side.

Conor McCamphill and Eamon Og McAllister added points to move the Whitehill side 10 in front but Carryduff were still battling against the odds and their best on view, Gareth Lynch got in for a goal in the 24th minute to give them a glimmer of hope.

Donal Rooney added a fine long range point for Carryduff with five minutes remaining but that was as close as they got With Sean Duffin pointing a free for the home side with three minutes remaining to conclude the scoring.
