Luckless St Mary’s miss out

Danske Bank Ulster College Huling – McNamee Cup Qualifying Blitz

Cross & Passion Ballycastle will play St Louis Ballymena and St Killian’s College Garron Tower will meet St Pat’s Maghera in the semi-finals of the McNamee Cup next week after today’s qualifying blitz at Woodlands, Belfast.

Luckless St Mary’s are the team who miss out, despite winning their final game against a fancied Garron Tower team. That win left them level on points with St Louis, but lose out on the head to head between the two in the round robin games, the Ballymena school getting home in that game by a single point.

CPC finished top with three wins and a draw, the draw coming against Garron Tower, while St Pat’s Maghera take second spot after winning three and losing just one. With just five minutes left to play in their final game against St Killian’s it looked like they were on course to complete the clean sweep and go through as winners. They lead the game by 0-5 to 0-0 with just five minutes remaining, but St Killian’s substitute Conlaoth McNaughton grabbed three late goals to turn the game on its head, just like Real Madrid the previous night and Man City.

Overall the defeat had no great effect on the St Pat’s team, but it sets up another meeting with the North Antrim school in next week’s semi-final.
