St Joseph’s Dunloy complete a unique double

The North Antrim Cumann na mBunscol Football Championships returned to Father Leonard Park in Cloughmills today after a two year hiatus hosted by the home team St Brigid’s PS, Cloughmills.

With the number of teams participating increasing by 50% from the last day out, a North Antrim Cup and Shield were both up for grabs.

Conditions were perfect, on what’s considered one of the best playing surfaces in Antrim and the boys and girls served up a feast of football proving that there is certainly room for ‘the big ball game’ as well, in what’s traditionally considered a hurling stronghold.

Congratulations to Cup winners, St Joseph’s Dunloy- who beat St Brigid’s, Ballymoney in the final and retaining their title as North Antrim champions in what was a very competitive final to complete the double, after winning the hurling title in Cushendall two weeks ago.

Glenann PS who won the Football Shield, receive the award from Kiearn Megraw of Gaelfast

Well done to Gleann PS, winners of the inaugural North Antrim Football Shield beating St Anne’s Corkey in an intriguing contest. Coached by former Dunloy dual star, Mr Shiver’s – they have now taken home silverware in all three codes this year in North Antrim

Thank you to the St Brigid’s club for providing their facilities for the day and the local primary school for hosting the event. A special word of thanks to the other competing teams; St Brigid’s Cloughmills, Ballycastle IPS and St Ciaran’s Cushendun, their teachers and coaches.

Finally, thank you to the referees for the day (Anton McGrath and Kieran Megraw) and indeed Gaelfast for their continued support in the promotion of our games throughout the county.
