Dominant opening quarter set St Enda’s up for the win

St Enda’s 1-17 Cushendun 2-11

A strong opening quarter, at the end of which they lead by 0-7 to 0-1, set up St Enda’s for a win over Cushendun in Wednesday evening’s Division 1 Hurling Leauge game at Glengormley.

Cormac Ross did most of the damage during that opening period for the home side, hitting five of the seven points, while Cormac Jenning and Ruairi Donaghy go the other two, while Cushendun’s solitary score came from Conlaoath McNeill.

Cushendun however began to find their range and points from McNeill, goalkeeper Gareth McGhee (from a long distance free) and Harry Kilgore were followed by a goal from Cavan McCormick to bring the sides level on 25 minutes. Rossa got Naomh Eanna back ahead with another point, this time from play, but Loaf McNeill and David Kilgore hit late points to give the Emmet;s at 1-6 to 0-9 lead at the break.

David Kilgore got the first score of the second half to put the north Antrim men two points clear, but Naomh Eanna responded well and points from Eion Conlon and Rory Bogue tied things up again on 35 minutes. When Conor Bannon grabbed Cushendun’s second goal in the 42nd minute the appeared to be getting on top, but Naomh Eanna claed their way back and Philly Curran, Cormac Rossa and Eoin Conlon all pointed to put their team a point ahead. Callum Kilgore levelled matters with a point for Cushendun, but the crucial score of the game ace on 55 minutes when Niall McGivern fired the ball to the visitors net. McGivern and Ruairi Diamond added points to take the game away from Cushendun, and though Loaf McNeill went for goal from a late free, his shot was saved and his point from the rebound was scant compensation
