Oisins beat the Shamrocks in league

Antrim Under 17 Hurling League – Division 1

Loughgiel 1-11 Oisins 1-17

Beaten by Loughgiel just over a week ago in the final of the Darragh Cup Oisins Glenariffe gained some measure of revenge when they beat the Shamrocks in Sunday’s league game at Fr Healey Park. Played as part of the Shamrocks Club Day the teams were given the opportunity to play in front of a big crowd yet again. The game never reached the heights of the Darragh Cup final, but it was always entertaing and included some great scores.

Oisins started strongly and were two ahead after four minutes through O’Connor brothers Orrin and Brogan, but hero of the Darragh Cup final win Jack McCloskey got Loughgiel on the scoreboard with a fantastic goal. Two pointed 65s from McCloskey and one from play from Roan McGarry, in reply to points from Patrick McIlwaine and Phelim Ward for the Oisin kept the Loughiel two ahead, but points from Calum McIlwaine and Orrin O’Connor brought the Glenariffe boys level by the 19th minute, and two minutes later they hit the front when O’Connor grabbed his team’s only goal of the game.

Oisins full forward Brogan O’Connor added a point to put five between the sides, and though Jack McCloskey came back with a point from play to cut the gap back to four the Oisins finished the half strongly with points from Oisin Mort and Phelim Ward to lead by 1-10 to 1-4 at half time.

An early exchange of points from Jack McCloskey and Brogan O’Connor kept the gap at six when the visitors keeper Paddy Joe Harvey made a great save to deny McCloskey a goal, his shot parried off the post and out to safety by the keeper who was to be called on a few times during the second half. When Phelim Ward and Brogan O’Connor added points for the Oisins the gap was out to eight, but Loughgiel were starting to get back into the game and four points in a row, two from Roan McGarry and two from Jack McCloskey brought them to within four nearing the end of the third quarter.

The Oisins had created plenty of chances of their own, but five wides saw the pressure mounting and there was a sense of relief when Phelim Ward ended their scoreless spell with a pointed free. Two more from Jack McCloskey kept Loughgiel well in touch, but Glenariffe finished strongly and points from Oisin Mort, Peadar McDonnell (scooped over the bar following a fine solo run) and Brogan O’Connor sealed the win.
