McDonnell and Murtagh goals sink Loch Mór

Junior B Hurling Championship – Round Robin 2

Loch Mór Dál gCais 2-14 St Brigid’s 3-20

St Brigid’s got their Junior B Hurling Championship campaign off to a great start when they beat Loch Mor Dal gCais in Saturday’s round robin game at MacCrory Park. Leading by a single point after a hard fought first half the Musgrve Park side pushed on the second period, and two goals in the 35th and 36th minutes swung the game decisively in their favour and they pushed on to win by 3-20 to 2-14 to put themselves in a strong position for a semi-final place.

The game started at a good pace and after eight minutes the sides were level on three points apiece, Darragh Turley (2) and Ruairi Bannon on target for Loch Mor , while Phelim Lennon, Oisin McDonnell and Fintan Clear scored for Naoimh Brid. The Musgrave Park side them pushed ahead with Rory Flanagan goal and points from Cleary and Lennon to go five up, but Loch Mor battled back to level by the the 23rd minute as Michael Morgan and Conor Joens points, before Ferida Carson scrambled home a goal. They were level on three more occasions before the break and it took a Niall Murtagh point in injury time to give St Brigid’s a one point lead at the change of ends.

Points from Phelim Lennon and Niall Duffy at the start of the second half pushed St Brigd’s three clear, but Carson grabbed his second goal on 33 minutes to level things up yet again. However St Brigid’s took a significant step towards victory when corner forward Oisin McDonnell and midfielder Niall Murtagh found the Louch Mór net twice in quick succession, and with Flanagan adding a point the Musgrave Park side had a cushion which would see them home. Part of their strength was the spread of scorers they had, while Luck Mor were very dependent of the excellent Darragh Turley who hit his team’s last six points, three of them from frees and one from a 65. St Brigid’s on the other hand had Flanagan, Gilleece, Cleary, Lennon and McDonnell on target as they went on to win by nine in the end.
