Portaferry clinch Division 1 League title

Antrim Hurling League Division 1

St John’s 1-15 Portaferry 5-20

Portaferry won their first Antrim Division 1 League title in twenty year when they easily accounted for and understrength St John’s team at Corrigan Park on Wednesday evening.

After falling behind it an early St John’s point Portaferry took control and hit four points on the trot before goals from Fionn Turpin and Tom McGratten in the 6th and 8th minutes gave them control of the game.

The Johnnies hit back with three points in a row but those scores were cancelled out when Eoghan Sands grabbed a third goal for the men from the Ards. Further goals from Conor Mageean on 26 minutes and from Matthew Conlan on 30 minutes stretched the lead even further and by the time Colm McDonald blew the half time whistle they were 5-12 to o-11 to the good.

It was clear there was no way back for the Johnnies at the start of the second half, and though they kept battling away Portaferry were able to use all their subs to get them some game time. They added eleven more points to their tally and Eoghan Sands finished the goal score with a good finish to seals the league title in style.
