Latharna Og host St Mary’s Larne Centenary Commeroration game on Saturday

This historic game is the centre piece in our Centinary events marking a team from our Town winning an All County Gaelic Football Championhsip 100 years on.

St Marys GAC a seperate entity from the towns current GAA club, Latharna Og are believed to have faded out of existence in the 1940s/1950s

“It will be a great opportunity to see Gaelic football being played in a town which is better known for hurling and Camogie”

Said St Marys 1922 historical society Chairman Gary Bergin

“In terms of participation levels and spectator numbers Gaelic Football is argueably the biggest sport in the country so its good to bring it to the area”

“A good squad of players have been preparing for the game for a few weeks now, alot of them never having played the sport before, this project has been an oppertunity for people to try something new, introduce a new sport to the town and most importantly recognise the achievements of the collection of Larne men 100 years ago”

“It all started with the oringal image of the St Marys 1922 panel.  Having that base of the photo along with the names of the players gave us something work with.

Theres been alot of work and research put into finding out information about this old club, conatcting decendents of players, discovering the club colours.  From this research we have been able to create a replica of the 1922 jersey which will be worn by one of the teams for the Centenary game.”

The game will take place on Saturday 13th August at the Brustin Braes 5pm and will be a Latharna Og team versus a team of players wearing the new St Marys replica kit.

The St Mary’s Larne team who won the Antrim Junior Football Championship 100 years ago, will be celebrated today (Saturday) at the Brustin Braes when Latharna Og will take on a St Mary’s select team
