Cushendall Camogs into Shield final

Bridie McMenamin Shield – Semi-final

Ruairi Og Cushendall 3-7 Eire Og Carrickmore 1-4

Cushendall secured their place in the final of the Bridie McMenamin Shield when they beat Tyrone champions Carrickmore in Saturday’s semi-final at Pairc Mhuire. Their success was based around the spread of scorers on the team, for while they had five different forwards who got their name on the scoreboard the visitors were over reliant on midfielder Aoibhinn Daly who scored all her team’s total of 1-5, and all of them from frees.

It was Daly who got the opening score of the game, a pointed free, but Cushendall soon took control of matters and in a ten minutes spell they hit 3-2 without reply. Monique O’Boyle started the run when she goaled from play on five minutes and that was followed less than a minute later by a Niamh Conlon point from play. O’Boyle’s second goal came just two minutes later, and after Lara Haughey sent one over from a free O’Boyle completed her hat-trick in the 14th minute.

Aoibhinn Daly pulled two back for Carrickmore in the 17th and 18th minutes, but points from Lara Haughey and player of the match Monique to give the Ruairis a 3-4 to – 0-3 half time lead.

When Daly grabbed a goal from a penalty in the second minute of the second half the gap was back to seven, but they were unable to build on the momentum that score created, and Niamh Conlon settled Cushendall again with a point from play. Two more points from Daly brought the gap back to six, but they failed to score during the last quarter and two points from Lara Haughey saw Cushendall home with a bit to spare.
