Cushendall Camogs win Bridie McMenamin Shield

Bridie McMenamin Shield

Ballerin 1-6 Cushendall 2-9

Cushendall 2nds won the Bridie McMenamin Shield when they beat Ballerin in Saturday’s final in Ballerin. The game had been fixed for Ahoghill but the pitch was deemed unplayable so after the toss of a coin Ballerin won home advantage.

In what turned out to be a hard fought game Cushendall started well as they added the first three points, two from Player of the Match Orlaith McAlister and one from corner forward Niam Conlon. However Ballerin began to get a foothold in the game and points from Caoimhe Higgins, and Clodagh Moore, plus a goal from corner forward Sinead Faulkner put them two ahead. Cushendall knew they were certainly in a game now, but just before the break they went back ahead when Orlaith McAlister fired to the Ballerin net to give her team a 1-3 to 1-2 advantage at the interval.

Two pointed free by Ballerin centre back Caoimhe Higgins early in the second half put the home team back in front, and though Orlaith McAlister brought the Ruairis back level, a Mileela Mullan point on 38 minutes restored the Ballerin advantage. However Cushendall were starting to gain the upper hand and a goal and two points, 1-1 of it from McAlister and a point from Niamh Conlon gave the Antrim champions a grip on the game. Higgins came back again with a pointed free for Ballerin but points from Lara Haughey and McAlister (2) sealed the win for Cushendall
