Duffin the difference as St. Ergnat’s claim second win

ACFL Division 1

St. Ergnat’s 0-11 Rossa 0-10

St. Ergnat’s Moneyglass maintained their good start to life in division 1 when they edged out O’Donovan Rossa in a tight encounter at Marian Hill today following a good win at St. Brigid’s last Sunday.

A man of the match performance by mid-fielder, Colm Duffin was the difference in the end as both teams took time to settle under the difficult underfoot conditions and it wasn’t until the 10th minute that Duffin pointed St. Ergnat’s ahead from a free.

It failed to ignite the contest however as both sides struggled to get it together but the impressive Duffin struck for his second to make it 0-2 to 0-0 for the home side.

This score seemed to provide the spark Hugh Carey’s side needed and they hit a further five before the break with Colum Duffin leading the way with four points to bring his first half total to six and jack McCoy getting the other point.

Indeed the home side were dominant during the second quarter and might have had a couple of goals but they still looked in a strong position at the halfway stage when they led 0-7 to 0-2 and were good value for that lead.

Rossa were badly off the pace during the opening half but the expected reaction came on the restart as they hit the first four points of the second half with Colm Fleming converting three frees to put his side right back into contention.

Conor Boyd eased the home side two in front after claiming a Mark with Rossa responding once again to leave the minimum between the sides but two more from impressive mid-fielder Colm Duffin looked to have clinched it for the South West side.

The visitors were not yet finished however and they pressed hard during the closing stages to close the gap to the minimum with Fleming to the fore but that was as close as they got with Moneyglass holding on for two valuable points.

Both sides deserve credit for serving up a good game of football in difficult underfoot conditions and St. Ergnat’s have shown that they can hold their own in division 1 following promotion from division 2 last season.
