St John’s beat Carey in Ballyvoy

Antrim Hurling League – Division 1

Carey Faughs 1.16 St Johns 2.21

The experience of Division one hurling stood St Johns in good stead during Sunday’s visit to Ballyvoy, where they took on Carey Faughs in a league game for the first time in many years. Despite both sides missing influential players this was a thrilling game of hurling played at a tremendous pace. The home side seemed to take time to get to terms with the pace of the game, and with CJ McKenna finding the net for an early St Johns goal after three minutes the Corrigan Park men held the upper hand. Conor McBride brought Carey back into contention with a goal after twelve minutes,  but with Down star Oisin McManus and the two Johnson brothers causing all sorts of problems the visitors pushed on to hold a 1.16 to 1.6 lead at the break.

With the advantage of the breeze in the second half the home side chipped away the visitors lead and at one stage reduced the gap to four points . However despite the prompting of Shay Hunter and James Black, Carey never got the vital second goal required and a last minute goal by Conor Johnson gave the Johnnies the score that settled the contest.
