Strong second half secures victory for Glenravel

Antrim Football League – Division 2

Gort an Mona 0-09 Glenravel  3-12

This was a very even  game for the first thirty minutes but the visitors took full advantage of playing down the hill in the second half and recorded an easy enough victory in the end despite being reduced to fourteen men with six minutes left on the clock. Glenravel opened strongly but squandered a few early chances before eventually getting their sights focussed on the target. Eamon Fyfe found the net with eighteen minutes gone to nudge Glenravel ahead after some fine points from Darren Boyd and Padraig McHugh for Gorts. The teams went in at half time with Glenravel ahead by a single point on a 1-05 to 0-07 score line.

The second half was completely dominated by Glenravel with some great points from Fyfe and Cormac McKeown stretching their lead. Declan Traynor rattled the bar and few minutes later David Higgins goaled for the visitors to effectively seal victory. Gort na Mona had managed the aerial battle in midfield well in the opening half but now were struggling to retain possession. Starved of meaningful ball they could only manage two scores in the second half off the boot of Ciaran Donnelly and a free from Darron Boyd. Four minutes into stoppage time, Glenravel’s Eamon Fyfe controlled a long ball in soccer style, dribbled past the defender and sent  the keeper the wrong way with a polished finish  which looked more like something you’d see in Coleraine Showgrounds then Páirc Mhic Ionnrachraigh. And with that referee Eamon Hamill called time in the late evening sunshine of Turf Lodge sealing a relatively straight forward victory for the visitors despite a very tight first half.
