Colaiste Feirste battled to the end but Rathmore always had their number

GAELFAST YEAR 8 FOOTBALL FINAL

Rathmore Grammar 5-13 Colaiste Feirste 5-03

Rathmore Grammar won a high scoring Year 8 Football Cup final at Dunsilly on Wednesday evening when they beat Belfast rivals Colaiste Feirste by 5-13 to 5-03.

It all looked like plain sailing for Rathmore when the played some great football to open up a 2-09 to 0-0 lead, both goals coming from Dermot Logan. Things looked bleak for the Irish College but led on by their brilliant midfielder Fionnbhar Stiobhard they started to claw their way back, Stiobhard grabbing two goals before the interval.

Rathmore led by 2-9 to 2-0 as the second half got underway and they stretched their lead with goals from Keevan Murray and Dermot Logan plus points from Se Wall, Logan and Finnegan to seal the win. However Colaiste Feirste kept battling away and a great wee spell in the final quarter saw them get their goal tally up to five by the end.

Rathmore were ruthless in the opening half and Garret Finnegan, Caleb Logan, Oliver Lloyd, Odhran O’Prey and Dermot Logan all contributed to the points tally, Logan also getting the two goals as they move 2-9 to 0-0 ahead. Colaiste Feirste did have a couple of good chances during that spell but were off target with their final shot, but in the final five minutes of that opening half they made the breakthrough and Stiobhard’s two goals made thing look much better.

The first half of the second period saw Rathmore regain their dominance of the game overall and the outcome was never in doubt. However you could sense a little unease among some of their supporters when Stiobhard had another real purple patch in the final quarter, but the gap was just too big to be bridged and the boys in blue were winners with a bit to spare.
