Team captains Carla McGarry and Maeve McKendry with match referee Martin Mulholland

Cloughmills LGFA made a winning start to their new league campaign when they travelled to Glenariffe on Sunday afternoon and beat the Oisins club by 4-5 to 2-01. The Biddies have been preparing for this occasion for almost a year now, and few clubs can have had the impact that they did on their first official outing. The supports who attended from both clubs had home ground looking more like Feis Sunday than a bitterly cold day in early April, as despite the conditions the fans were there in force.

The Oisins made a good start and a goal from full forward Eimear McAfee and a point from Gemma Black appeared to put them in control. However the newest club in Antrim LGFA were begining to find their feet as the game progressed and after being denied on a couple of occasions by very good saves by Oisins keeper Meabh McIlwaine Cloughmills eventually made the historic breakthrough when midfielder Carla McGarry grabbed  the club’s first ever score in league football when she fired in an angled shot from the right to the back of the Oisins net.

The score clearly lifted the visitors and they drew level minutes later when Carlina Sullivan fired over a point.

The Biddies were now in control and further points from Aine Magill, Sinead Johnston put them 1-4 to 1-1 ahead by half time, despite McGarry having a penalty saved by the Oisins netminder McIlwaine.

Oisins corner forward Gemma Black brought her team back level early in the second half with a well taken goal, but Grace Kearns put Cloughmills back in front again when she fired home from close range, following a ‘45’. Glenariffe’s Dervla McMullan looked set to bring the home team level again but was denied by a great save by Cloughmills netminder Dana Stockman.

However the pressure was starting to tell and following another great save by the Oisins keeper, player of the match Carla McGarry finished high to the corner of the Oisins net. There was no stopping the Cloughmills girls now and after Carlina Sullivan added a point Carla McGarry completed her hat-trick of goals with another top class finish.
