The Year 8 Ulster Gaelic Football Blitz was a day filled with excitement and spirited competition, celebrating the legacy of three former St. Louis past pupils and great Gaels: Connor Marron, Aidan Walsh, and Conall Gould. Their contributions to the sport and community were honoured through the coveted Connor Marron Cup, Aidan Walsh Shield, and Conall Gould Player of the Tournament awards.
Teams and Groups
The event featured a diverse line-up of schools from all over Ulster. Aquinas Belfast, Colaiste Feirste Belfast, Holy Trinity Cookstown, Rathmore Belfast, SLG 1 SLG 2, St Ciaran’s Ballygawley, St Joseph’s Donaghmore, St Malachy’s Belfast, St Mary’s Magherafelt, St Mary’s Belfast, St Patrick’s Keady, St Pius Magherafelt.
The teams were divided into groups, each battling it out in a series of matches to advance to the finals.
The Shield Semi-Finals
In the semi-finals of the Aidan Walsh Shield, Colaiste Feirste faced off against St Malachy’s Belfast. Colaiste Feirste edged out St Malachy’s in a tightly contested game, demonstrating their tactical prowess and determination. On the other side, St Mary’s Magherafelt clashed with St Ciaran’s Ballygawley. This match was equally intense, with St Mary’s Magherafelt emerging victorious. Their cohesive teamwork and strategic play were key factors in securing their place in the final.

The Shield Final
The Aidan Walsh Shield final saw St Mary’s Magherafelt and Colaiste Feirste go head-to-head in a thrilling match. Both teams displayed exceptional talent and sportsmanship, but it was St Mary’s Magherafelt who triumphed by a single goal. The close score-line reflected the competitive nature of the match and the high level of skill exhibited by both sides.

The Cup Semi-Finals
In the semi-finals for the prestigious Connor Marron Cup, St Joseph’s Donaghmore faced off against a talented Rathmore side. St Joseph’s displayed excellent teamwork and strategic play to secure their spot in the final. In the other semi-final, St Patrick’s Keady overcame a strong St Pius team. Despite St Pius showcasing several talented individuals, St Patrick’s Keady’s cohesive team performance and tactical acumen saw them through to the final.

The Cup Final
The Connor Marron Cup final between St Patrick’s Keady and St Joseph’s Donaghmore was the highlight of the day. Both teams were evenly matched, resulting in a thrilling game that couldn’t be decided in regular time. Extra time was needed, and St Patrick’s Keady capitalized on their opportunities, taking their scores well to secure a hard-fought victory. The match was a superb display of football, embodying the spirit and skill of the young athletes.

Awards and Recognition
The day concluded with the awarding of the prestigious titles:
Connor Marron Cup: St Patrick’s Keady, for their outstanding performance in the cup final.
Aidan Walsh Shield: St Mary’s Magherafelt, for their victory in the shield final.
Conall Gould Player of the Tournament: F. Stewart from Colaiste Feirste, who was recognised for his immaculate first touch and finishing skills. This award was voted by teachers, staff, and referees. Congratulations to St Mary’s Magherafelt for winning the Aidan Walsh Shield and St Patrick’s Keady for claiming the Connor Marron Cup on a day filled with fun and high-level football.

The event not only celebrated their memory but also showcased the future stars of the sport, ensuring that the rich tradition of Gaelic football continues to thrive in Ulster. A special thanks from St Louis to the referees on the day R Leahy and B Toland as-well as the Saffron Gael for capturing all of the action.
