Emmet’s show good form as championship approaches

Antrim Hurling League – Division 2

Cushendun 3-18 St Gall’s 0-13

Cushendun had fourteen points to spare over St Gall’s in Sunday’s Antrim Hurling League Division 2 game at CushLig an Airgid on Sunday, and even though their league chances have gone the win shows a welcome return to form with the championship just a few weeks away.

An Alex McMullan goal in the opening minute and two points from frees from Loaf McNeill saw the Emmet’s get off to a great start and though Marc Napier and Conor Donnelly pulled a couple back for the St Gall’s. The home side hit three of the next four scores as Conor Bannon, Loaf McNeill and Andrew Breslin stretched the lead to 1-5 to 0-3 by the end of the first quarter, the other St Gall’s score come from Napier.

Two points from Jack Hopkins and Ronan Crossan kept the visitors in touch but Cushendun finished the first half strongly and two from Calum Kilgore, one from Alex McMullan and a point direct from a sideline by Loaf saw them open up a seven point lead at the interval.

(1-09 to 0-5)

The second half started with the team exchanging two points apiece but nine minutes in the Emmet’s put the game beyond doubt when Colum McKeegan grabbed his second goal. Goal number three, this time from Alex McMullan ended the game as a contest, and though the men from Milltown ended the final quarter by adding another five points through, three from Napier and two from Jackson McGreevy it was never enough to trouble the home team’s lead and they ended with a fourteen point cushion.
