Antrim Minor Hurling Championship – Quarter final
Loughgiel 1-15 Glenariffe-Glenravel 1-16
Glenariffe- Glenravel staged a remarkable comeback to beat Loughgiel in Sunday’s Antrim Minor Hurling Championship quarter final at Fr Healy Park. Leading by five points at half time after playing with the aid of the strong wind it just seemed a matter of time until the Shamrocks took control, and when they went ahead in the 50th minute it appeared the visitors chance had gone. However the Glenariffe-Glenravel combination refused to give up and outscored their home side by four points to two in the last seven minutes to earn a semi-final place against Ballycastle in two weeks’ time.

With the wind at their backs in the opening half the visitors got away to a great start with points from Cayden Graham and Oisin Gillan, two from Canice McIntosh and a goal from centre-back Colla Ward had them 1-04 to 0-01 after 12 minutes. Loughgiel hit back with a point from Liam McGarry and a brilliantly taken goal by full-forward Conan Johnston to leave just two between the teams. An exchange of points by Glenariffe-Glenravel’s Canice McIntosh and Loughgiel’s Conan Johnston kept it that way until a great point following a solo run by Colla Ward started a run which yielded four in a row to move six clear, but just on half time Conan Johnston pulled one back to leave five in it at the break.
Loughgiel would have been confident of closing the gap, such was the strength of the wind and when they started with points from Johnston and substitute Joe Casey (star of Wednesday evening’s U16 win over Ard na Rí) they seemed to have matters in hand. A Canice McIntosh point put the gap out to four again but slowly but surely the began to reel the opposition in as two by Liam McGarry, one by Oisin Connolly and two more by Johnston saw them hit the front in the 51st minute.

A great score by Christy Leech and one from Oisin Gillan put the visitors back ahead by the 57th minute but Liam McGarry brought the Shamrocks back level with time almost up. McIntosh restored the Glenariffe-Glenravel lead and when Logan McConville tied things up again, extra time was looming. However Oisin Gillan saved the day for the championship holders and when he split the uprights one minute into injury time the win was sealed.
