Loughgiel 3-15 St Paul’s 2-17
A goal in the second minute of injury time by corner forward Joe Casey saw Loughgiel snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in Tuesday evening’s thrilling Under 16 Hurling final at Dunsilly. Trailing by 0-01 to 1-06 at the end of the opening quarter St Paul’s looked a well beaten team, but once they found their touch they fought their way back and a Jade Gamble goal just before half time cut their arrears to just four points
. When the Belfast boys started the second half with two quick points to reduce their arrears to just two it set up an absorbing second half which saw the lead swing from one side to the other.
A goal and three points without reply midway through the second half appeared to put St Pauls in control but a goal on fifty minutes by full forward Cody McGarry brought Loughgiel right back into the game. The game swung one way then the other but two pointed frees by full forward Oisin McLaren put St Paul’s two ahead as the clock ticked past the sixty minute mark. However the Shamrocks kept battling and though a long free into the danger area by Joe Deery was cleared to safety, the left-half forward got a second chance a minute later and this time it paid dividends, and when the ball was partially cleared to Joe Casey the corner forward crashed it home to seal the win.
