St. Gall’s collect first Camogie title

U14C Camogie Championship final

St. Gall’s 4-9 Cargin 1-1

St Gall’s CLG are famed for their successes on the football pitch but yesterday was the turn of their camogie team to record a wee bit of history as they won the Antrim C camogie championship.

Having lost out in the football final in June, the St Galls girls faced Cargin determined that lightening wouldn’t strike twice at Dunsilly.  From the very first whistle, the Milltown side thundered into every challenge and they raced into an early lead thanks to a point from Gemma Rose Mullan and an Aoife Hughes goal.

Cargin responded quickly with a goal of their own from Caoimhe McCann but St Galls upped the ante with further points from Mullan and a Jessica Chapman goal.  Cargin attempted to battle their way back into the game but the St Galls back line stood firm.

The final score of the opening half fell to St Galls as half forward, Caragh Flynn, found the net through a crowded goalmouth to give the West Belfast girls a nine point lead at the break.

Cargin started the second half with renewed vigour but despite Caoimhe McErlains strength, skill and agility in the middle of the field, they were unable to find the space to create an opening due to the tenacity of the St Galls girls tackling.

Gemma Mullan continued to knock over some fantastic long range points and when Aoife Hughes found the net for the second time, it was clear that the trophy would travelling down the M2 with the girls in blue.

St Gall’s showed strength and skill and despite the best efforts of Aoife

ODonnell in the full backline, Caoimhe McErlain in the middle and Caoimhe McCann in the forward line, the result and the cup would go to the Milltown girls

Miah Boyd showed great strength and skill in defence but St Galls were able to use their own strength to ensure they kept themselves in front throughout.

Roísín Bradley was excellent under the high ball and battled hard to try and clear her lines and her strong puc-outs was a feature of the game.

The referee’s full time whistle signalled a surge of blue and white onto the pitch as St Galls enjoyed the first ever camogie title in the club’s 113 year history. Camogie was only introduced to St Galls two years ago so winning a county title at such an early stage is a phenomenal achievement and one that is definitely worth celebrating.

Antrim Senior Camogie Championship – round robin 4

Loughgiel 0-8 Cushendall 0-4

A hailstorm five minutes into the second half of Saturday’s group tie between Loughgiel and Cushendall in the Travel Coaches Ireland Antrim senior championship forced the abandonment of the game.

Loughgiel were leading by 0-8 to 0-4 at that stage and the teams agreed to allow that score line to be submitted as a final score because they were already set to meet each other next weekend in the semi-finals.

Katie McKillop fired over the opening two points and the Shamrocks went on to lead by 0-7 to 0-1 with Róisín McCormick scoring three of those points.

Scores late in the half from Dervla Cosgrove and Orlagh O’Hara saw Cushendall trail by 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.

O’Hara had added a point from a free on the re-start before the hail began and the referee took the teams off the pitch with under foot conditions dangerous.

Loughgiel: R McCormick 0-4, 2 frees, K McKillop 0-2, O Laverty 0-1, L McNaughton 0-1

Cushendall: D Cosgrove 0-2, 1 free, O O’Hara 0-2 frees

St. Ergnat’s Moneyglass proved too strong for Latharna Og Larne in this Development Cup semi-final at Magherafelt Leisure centre.

A first half hat-trick from Sinead McCoy and another from her namesake, Trina McCoy sent the Marian Hill girls on their way to a 4-4 to 0-4 half time lead and even at this stage it looked as good as over.

The St. Ergnat’s first half points came courtesy of their star forward, Sinead McCoy who added two to her three goal salvo with Alicia Boyd and Niamh McKeefrey also on target.

Latharna Og fought hard to keep in touch during the opening period with points from Ashling Mulvenna (f), and two from Beth McAuley with their only score from play coming from Bronagh Shields, two minutes from half time.

Alicia Boyd fired home St. Ergnat’s fifth goal of the contest, two minutes into the second half and while the goals dried up after that, the points continued to flow from the sticks of the Moneyglass girls.

Holly Gillan replied with a point for the Larne girls, a minute later but it would be their only score of the half as St. Ergnat’s continued to fire over points at the other end.

Ciara Scullion, Katie Scullion 0-2, the superb Sinead McCoy and two more from Ciara Scullion saw the Marian Hill girls run out convincing winners to earn a spot in the final where they will face Sarsfield’s on the 22nd October.

Wins for Dunloy and Loughgiel in Camogie Championship

Travel Ireland Coaches Antrim senior championship

Dunloy 3-14 Cushendall 1-9

Loughgiel 6-23 Brídíní Óga Glenravel 3-4

ALTHOUGH Cara O’Boyle opened the scoring with a Cushendall point in Saturday’s Travel Ireland Coaches Antrim senior camogie championship, her team conceded the next two goals and six points to Dunloy.

By the time Katie Molloy goaled directly from a free in the 20th minute, Dunloy had already registered five points, including three from the free-taker. Áine Magill added the second goal in the 22nd minute and Dunloy turned around with a 2-6 to 0-4 interval lead.

Molloy pointed on the re-start and Cushendall weren’t able to close the gap until points from sub Kady McNeill, Brogan Abram and Cara O’Boyle made it 2-9 to 0-9 with ten minutes left.

Abram’s 53rd minute goal from a free closed it further, but Dunloy finished strongly with points from Molloy and Eimear Johnston and then a 57th minute goal from Áine Magill.

Sunday’s game went as expected with champions Loughgiel easing to a 6-23 to 3-4 victory over Brídíní Óga.

Chloe Higgins had the sliotar in the Glenravel net inside 60 seconds and further goals from Caitrin Dobbin and Katie McKillop put Loughgiel in at the break with an advantage of 3-10 to 1-3.

Glenravel had their best spell during the first 20 minutes of the second half where goals from Aimee Traynor and Ashling Millar cancelled out 1-4 from the home side, but a goal from Róisín McCormick started a run of 2-8 without reply in the last ten minutes to emphasise the gap between the teams.

Dunloy: K Molloy 1-7, 1-5 frees, Á Magill 2-1, Brónach Magill, Bríd Magill, Eear Johnston, Caoimhe Molloy, Erin Elliott and Nicole McAtamney 0-1 each.

Cushendall: B Abram 1-2 frees, C O’Boyle 0-3, S McKillop 0-2, D Cosgrove 0-1 free, K McNeill 0-1.

Loughgiel: C Dobbin 2-6, 0-3 frees, R McCormick 2-6, 0-1 free, K McKillop 1-4, C Higgins 1-2, E McFadden, A Boyle, A Connolly, L McNaughton and O Laverty 0-1 each.

Brídíní Óga: A Millar 2-0, A Traynor 1-1, E McAleenan 0-2 frees, E Coulter 0-1.
