Glenravel into Shield final

Senior Reserve Shield Final

Aldergrove 0-04   Glenravel 1-14

Glenravel’s only two defeats this season have been at the hands of tonight’s opponents Aldergrove. So accordingly they would have been keen to avenge those defeats in tonight’s Reserve Shield semi-final, which they did with some aplomb. Aldergrove’s only point in the first half came in the fifth minute, and in fact it would take them another thirty five minutes before they were able to add to that total by which time their opponents were out of sight. Glenravel played up the hill in the first half and would have been happy to go in at half-time on a five points to one point lead. Aldergrove would have needed a good start to the second half but four points on the bounce in the opening ten minutes of that half left Glenravel leading nine points to one and surely at that stage home and hosed.

Aldergrove would’ve felt aggrieved to have been reduced to 14 men with five minutes of the first half remaining for what looked like an innocuous enough foul, but in truth, they never threatened their opponents on the night and came up well short at the end of the sixty minutes. The did have plenty of possession but their shooting let them down badly.

Aiden O’Donnell opened the scoring from a free in the first minute and Daniel McQuillan quickly doubled that lead before Connor Morris pulled one back from a free for Aldergrove. That was with five minutes played and little did the Aldergrove supporters know it would be another 35 minutes before they would get on the scoreboard again. Cormac McKeown, Daragh, Donaghy, and Aiden O’Donnell added to the Glenravel total to put them into a 0-05 to 0-01 lead going into the second half.

In the opening minute of that new half, Cormac McKeown burst through the Aldergrove rearguard to score a point and three minutes later he unleashed a rasper which just grazed the top of the crossbar and went over for a point. A few inches lower and it would have surely lifted the net. Joe Martin and Cormac McKeown would follow up again and with 10 minutes of the second have gone, Glenravel led 0-9 to 0-1.

Connor Morris pulled a point back for Aldergrove on the 41st minute, but that was then followed by two wonderful scores from deep on the left-hand side by Aiden O’Donnell. Cormac McKeown popped up with a point on 46 minutes and that was followed by a Daragh Donaghy point on to leave the score 0-13 to 0-02.

Glenravel were dominating all over the pitch and the introduction of Sean McKay, who goaled soon after  his introduction, to put the match out of reach of their opponents. Sean Patrick Fay would put over the Aldergrove third point with nine minutes of the game remaining, and the final two scores of the game came from Cormac McKeown from Glenravel to leave the final score, 1-14 to 0-04 in favour of the Glensmen. They will now face Dunloy, conquerers of Ardoyne, in the final on Wednesday, September 6.

Reserve football Championship  semi-finals on Wednesday night

The two Reserve Football Championships, Cup and Shield have reached the semi-final stages and the finalists in both will be known after Wednesday night’s round of games.

Cargin v Creggan

In the cup there are two interesting games down for decision and the meeting of Cargin and Creggan in Toome have provided the eventual winners of the competition for the last number of years.

Both clubs have strong panels and indeed Cargin fielded three teams this year with their thirds competing in the division 2 reserve league and championship.

Creggan have always been there or there about in this competition and had two points to spare over a good Lamh Dhearg side in the quarter-final after a big win away to Aghagallon in the previous round.

Tir na nOg didn’t field against Cargin in the last 16 and St. John’s conceded to the Toome men in the quarter-final.

Just how that will affect the Erin’s Own remains to be seen and this one could go either way but home advantage and a bigger panel may see Cargin emerge victorious from this one.

Rossa v St. Gall’s

Up in Belfast Rossa entertain St. Gall’s in the second cup semi-final with the Milltown side fielding quite a number of their Ulster and All Ireland winning side from 2010 in their one point quarter-final win over St. Brigid’s

Rossa were convincing winners over St. Enda’s and have St. Gall’s as visitors to Shaw’s Road for their semi-final and with the Flavin brothers Enda and Conor, Jack Morris, Mick McEnhill and Pearse Shortt in their side will not be found wanting and this one should be close.

Aldergrove v Glenravel

In the first of the Shield semi-finals Con Magee’s Glenravel travel to Crumlin to play St. James’ Aldergrove and will face a stiff challenge from an Aldergrove side who are notoriously difficult to beat at home.

Glenravel have had an excellent season and had a good win at Quinn Park over All Saints with 10 points separating the teams at the final whistle.

Aldergrove looked to be coasting to victory in their quarter-final against Ahoghill but were hit by two late goals and were forced to hang on for a narrow victory.

Once again this looks like one that could go either way but Glenravel might just edge the contest.

Dunloy v Ardoyne

In the second Shield semi-final Ardoyne, who recorded a good home win over Sarsfields in round 1 before beating Naomh Padraig Lisburn at Fennell Park, travel to Dunloy.

The Cuchullian’s had four points to spare in a six goal thriller at Rasharkin before travelling again to Enright Park where they squeezed past Gort na Mona by two points in the quarter-final.

This time they have home advantage and will no doubt have been lifted by their Senior sides win over St. Gall’s in the Senior Football Championship and I expect Dunloy to come out on top in this one.

Lamhs day of celebration as they receive the Division 2 trophy

Antrim LGFA Division 2

Lamh Dhearg 4-20 St Enda’s 1-6

Lamh Dhearg celebrated winning Division 2 of the Antrim LGFA League with a comprehensive win over St Enda’s in their final game of the league campaign at Hannahstown on Sunday evening.

With a good support there to join in the celebrations the home side were on the front foot from the start and went four points up after seven minutes, the scores coming from Ciara Doherty (2), Rachael Mulholland and Orlaith Webb. It all appeared to be plain sailing but they Lamh Dhearg girls received a jolt when St Enda’s came back with a goal on nine minutes from midfielder Kearna Donnelly to cut their deficit back to just a point.

However the Lamhs were soon back in control and after Robyn Murray added a point, full forward Ciara Doherty fired in a goal at the other end to put them back in control and Orlaith Webb added another on 23 minutes to help her side to a 2-7 to 1-2 lead by half time.

The second half turned out to be a one way traffic as the Hannahstown girls took control all over the field. Two points apiece by Rachael Mulholland and Isla Annett, plus one from Maebh Martin opened the gap even further, before Orlaith Webb grabbed her team’s third goal on 40 minutes. The points kept flowing as Larkin, McKinley, Annett, Murray and Mulholland found the target. St Enda’s did come back with a couple of points of their own but Lamh Dhearg put the seal on a great win with goal number four from Robyn Murray five minutes from time.

Antrim GAA for All teams play in Croke Park

It was a dream come true for many as our Antrim GAA for All teams paid a visit to Croke Park to participate in the Ulster GAA for All Activity Day on Thursday 17th August.

Alongside other teams from around Ulster, Antrim All Stars, St Mary’s Aghagallon All Stars and Naomh Éanna All Stars showed off their wonderful skills and abilities on the hallowed turf of Croke during well organised sessions run by the Ulster Council. The sun shone on all our players throughout the day. The pride shining from their families and supporters in the stands was even brighter.

Aghagallon All Stars and Naomh Éanna were first off the mark and fun was the name of the game. The teams spent a while getting a feel for the pitch, shooting goals and points before participating in their training session and fun games.

Antrim All Stars team were next up and they played against a strong Fermanagh side. Some of the Aghagallon players got the opportunity to play for the county also and made their debut cheered on by the large crowd of supporters. Antrim All Stars gave a stunning performance to be proud of!

It was a day full of joy and pride not only for the families involved, but most notably for the players, coaches and volunteers. A culmination of all their hardwork, perseverance and dedication to training. Our teams did Antrim proud!

Of course Bert Trowlen was there for the Saffron Gael along with is assistant Sarah Geoghegan to capture these speical memories. We can’t thank Bert enough for the great work he does for these teams and for the Saffron Gael

Antrim Stars meet Aghagallon All Stars

Saturday was a very exciting training session for the Aghagallon All Stars as some special visitors arrived to wish them well before their long awaited trip to Croke Park this week.

Antrim Camogie players Chloe McShane and Niamh Cosgrove, Antrim ladies footballers Anna Mullholand and Grainne McLaughlin and Antrim men’s footballer Marc Jordan kindly took time out of their busy schedule on Saturday to visit the Aghagallon All Stars team during their special sponsored training session in Páirc na nGael.

Antrim Camogie stars Naimh Cosgrove and Chloe McShane with Jay Beatty at the Aghagallon All Stars big day last weekend.

The Antrim legends joined in with both the younger and the older group’s training sessions and the children got the chance to show off all their skills and determination. The Antrim girls even got a chance to learn a few new skills themselves as they keenly jumped into the visiting ice cream van to give out ice cream to all the children. Grainne and Chloe proved a dab hand at pulling a poke!

Aghagallon All Stars coordinator, Bronagh McCavigan stated, ‘We want to thank all the Antrim players for coming here today. It has given the kids a real lift to meet their heroes and boosts all our excitement for going to Croke Park. We hope to go and do our club and county proud just like the Antrim players here today!’
