The day begin with seven schools in attendance, namely; St Brigid’s Ballymena, St Joseph’s Crumlin, Mount St Michael’s Randalstown, St Mary’s Portglenone, Mary Queen of Peace Glenravel, Moneynick and Millquarter. Each school had plenty of game time and had the opportunity to compete against all other schools. The group stage saw Mount St Michaels, Mary Queen of Peace, St Joseph’s and St Mary’s qualify for the semi-final of the cup. Two excellent semi-finals resulted in the lads from Randalstown and Portglenone going head to head and it is the Mount St Michael’s team who will go forward to represent the South West at the all county finals. Congratulations to them.
Shield winners, St. Brigid’s Ballymena
The shield competition saw silverware go to St Brigid’s of Ballymena, overcoming Millquarter in a memorable penalty shootout in the semi-final. They faced up against an excellent Moneynick team in the final and after a close, tense and enthralling final, it was penalties again!!!! Some excellent penalties and outstanding goalkeeping saw the shield go the way of the boys from Ballymena.
Ring-rusty Antrim were no match for Dublin in Sunday’s Dioralyte Walsh Cup Group 2 game at Parnell Park on Sunday as they were well beaten by a sharper looking Dublin side. While it was the Saffron’s first time together this season, due to the cancellation of last weekend’s scheduled game against Westmeath, the Dubs had the advantage of a game against the same opposition in the opening round.
As well as that the Ulster men are facing into the new season with a third of last years team gone from the panel so nobody was really expecting much from this game, and for a while they stayed with their opponents pretty well, but their inability to win prime possession cost them dearly while Dublin were confident and assure throughout.
The home team got away to a flyer with three quick point, and though Antrim battled well to get the gap back to 0-3 to 0-5, Dublin won six poc-outs in a row and stretched their lead to six. Some good free taking by Rian McMullan and a couple of impressive scores from play by Paul Boyle kept them in touch and as the game entered first half injury time they were just seven behind, but Diarmuid Ó Dúlaing fired in a goal with the last poc of the half to send his team to the dressing rooms with a ten point cushion.
With the breeze behind them in the second half, and playing ‘down the slope’ Rian McMullan’s quick point briefly raised hopes, but two inside a minute from the Dubs had the gap out to eleven. Paul Boyle, who was Antrim’s most effective forward from play, got one back, but three in a row Burke (2) and Ó Dúlaing widened the gap even further. Two points inside a minute from Rian McMullan and substitute Fred McCurry gave the visiting fans a bit of hope, but Ó Dúlaing and Flanagan came back with points before Ó Dúlaing closed the door firmly in Antrim faces with a well taken goal.
To ther credit Antrim kept battling and Rian McMullan showed great accuracy from free and finished with a sweetly struck goal from play, but by that stage Dublin were out the gate and gone, and looking forward to a semi-final during the week.

The Antrim team to play Dublin in Sunday’s Walsh cup game at Parnell Park has been named, and as you can imagine there are quite a few changes from the side that lined out against Westmeath in last season’s Leinster Championship in Mullingar.
Tiernan Smyth is in goals while his Ballycastle club mate Conor Boyd comes in at corner back, a new position for the McQuillan’s man. Dunloy’s Ryan McGarry is at full back with Paddy Burke in the left corner back position as the Ruairi Og contingent return to action following their All Ireland campaign. Two of Burke’s Cushendall team mates line out in the half back line with Scott Walsh at right half back, Eogan Campbell at centre back and Enda Og McGarry of Loughgiel Shamrocks completing the line, wearing the no. 7 shirt.

St John’s Conal Bohill and St Enda’s Niall O’Connor form a new look midfield, while Dunloy’s Eoin McFerran makes his senior debut at right half forward. Niall McKenna of Sarsfields lead the attack at centre forward with Paul Boyle of Loughgiel Shamrocks lining out on the left wing. Conal Cunning of Dunloy Cuchullains is named in the left corner with Creggan’s Conor McCann making a welcome return at full forward after a long absence through injury. Loughgiel’s Rian ‘Bubbles’ McMullan completes the line up as he wears the no. 15 shirt at top of the right

With last Sunday’s scheduled Walsh Cup game against Westmeath being cancelled just before throw-in the Saffrons go into this game short of match practice and they face a tough task against a Dublin side who scored a big win against the Westmeath men in their section of the round robin group ten days ago.
The game gets underway at 1-30 and for those unable to make it to Dublin they can watch the live stream on clubber.ie though I would advise anyone doing so to give yourself a bit time logging in as it is not the easiest site to find you way around.
