Glen Rovers Armoy made an impressive start to their Division 2 League campaign when they travelled to Belfast and beat St Gall’s by 7-19 to 0-8 at the Bog Meadows. St Gall’s may have been short a few regulars but to register a such scoreline was a most impressive feat by the Armoy men. Scorer in chief was full-forward Owen Kinney who hit the back of the St Gall’s net on no less than six occasions as he gave the home team’s full-back line a torrid time.

There was no early indications that it was going to be such a one sided affair as St Gall’s took the lead on six minutes and it was nine minute before the visitors register a reply as Martin McErlain sent over the equaliser. Johnny McErlain put them in front, and though St Gall’s levelled a minute later McErlain was on target from a free once again to edge Armoy back in front. Midway through the first half they began to get a real grip on the game when full forward Owen Kinney found the net, and when Thomas Burns and Johnny McErlain added points a gap was starting to appear. St Gall’s pulled a point back but Kinney struck for his second goal soon afterward and when PJ McBride and Johnny McErlain (free) tagged on points a real gap was starting to appear, and by half time they were 2-10 to 0-5 to the good.

The real barrage started early in the second half when Kinney completed his hat trick and minutes later made it four. By this stage it was clear the size of the winning margin was the only thing to be decided and as Kinney ran riot the fifth and sixth goals quickly followed. Johnny McErlain also had a field day, hitting 12 points overall, 8 of them from frees while substituteTrevor Linton grabbed the other goal in a memorable day for the Armoy men.

Armoy scorers – Eoin Kinney 6-0; Johnny McErlain 0-12 (8 frees); Trevor Linton 1-0; Conor Christie 0-2; Martin McErlain, Tommy Burns and PJ McBride 0-1 apiece.
