Ciaran Doherty & Co Accountants Under-16 League
The Ciaran Doherty U16 Football League got under way on Thursday night following the launch of the ACMFL on Tuesday and despite some inclement weather GAA competitions in Antrim are well under way, a credit to those responsible for fixture scheduling.
We were at Toome last night as Erin’s Own, Cargin took on visitors Cuchullain’s, Dunloy and like Tuesday night’s Minor game at Pearse Park the goals came thick and fast but this time it was the young Cuchullain’s who were on the receiving end.
Goals Galore at Toome as Cargin Collect Opening Win
Erin’s Own Cargin 10-14 Cuchullian’s Dunloy 2-09
There were goals galore at Toome on Thursday evening as the Cargin boys opened their under-16 programme in style with a big win over visiting Dunloy.
The Erin’s Own side hoisted ten green flags in all during the sixty minutes and indeed they were denied more by the excellence of the Cuchullian’s net-minder Paudie Mc Guigan who stood tall to make a number of superb saves over the hour.
The Cargin lads had made their intentions clear from the outset and less than thirty seconds had elapsed when the pace laden PJ Quinn nipped in from the right hand side to send to the corner of the net after Conor Kelly had claimed the start throw in.
The Toome lads added another shortly tafter via Peter John Mc Aleese after Benen Kelly fetched in the middle and sent the livewire full forward in to collect.
Dunloy did add a goal of their own in the 6th minute after a slick build up opened the way for Dara Crawley to fire into the corner of the Cargin net but the resultant kick out gathered by Eunan Kelly ensured Tome Shivers made reply in kind at the other end within a minute.
The sides went on to swap scores at either end as white flags raised in support of the home side by Peter John Mc Aleese and PJ Quinn were answered in kind by Cahir Mc Closkey and Oisin Elliot.
The home side, moving well in the offensive were causing problems a plenty for the Cuchullian’s rear guard but net minder Paudie Mc Guigan was proving defiant in the extreme making several excellent saves to deny Tom Shivers, PJ Quinn (twice) and Benen Kelly but Eunan Quinn did collect another major in the 22nd minute.
The centre forward rose highest to punch a Peter John Mc Aleese lofted delivery to the back of the net and the Toome boys had gone 4-06 to 1-02 ahead at the 22nd minute.
Dunloy did raise their efforts, and indeed lift the siege for a term in the latter stages of the period as Daithi Mc Guigan, Cahir Mc Closkey and Dara Crawley raised respective back to back whites but the home side were to have the last say of the half.
Will O the Wisp PJ Quinn was sent away on the left by Malachy Johnston to plant to the back of the net in the 27th minute and another major from Benen Kelly after Eunan Quinn’s delivery saw the home side in command with a 6-07 to 1-05 interval lead.
The home side opened the second period on the positive but after further scores from PJ Quinn and a super Malachy Johnston effort extended their advantage came a couple of moments when the home sides net-minder Paudie Mc Laughlin was cast firstly as hero and then as less than such.
In the first instance the keeper, who is more often operates in an offensive spot made an absolutely eye-watering 140 metre solo run the full length of the Toome arena, from square to square leaving a whole posse toiling in his wake before he was unceremoniously hauled to ground.
A penalty was the prompt award and Peter John Mc Aleese punished when despatching to the back of the net to see the Cargin boys move into calm waters with a 7-09 to 1-06 advantage.
A few minutes later the young keeper saw red following a foul on the advancing Dara Crawley inside his area at the expense of a penalty and his side reduced to 14 for the remainder.
Daithi Mc Guigan sent the spot award over the crossbar and the resultant kick out saw Benen Kelly and Tom Shivers link up to open the door for PJ Quinn to fire past Paudie Mc Guigan.
The visitors replied in kind at the other end as Dara Crawley added a second goal but that was to be as close as they were to get and the home side finished with a flourish as Benen Kelly added goal number ten and with Shane Gribbin, Peter John Mc Aleese (2), and PJ Quinn (2), raising further whites Cargin breasted the line full value for a 10-14 to 2-09 win.
