Gribbin double earns Cargin a semi berth

All County U-15 Football (B) Championship

Erin’s Own Cargin 2-07 St John’s 1-08

A couple of goals in the opening period by the impressive Callum Gribbin proved the key to open the way for Cargin to secure a place in the semi-final of the under-15B football championship at the expense of a good St Johns side at Toome on Sunday last.

The visitors took an early lead at 0-03 to 0-02 as the end of the opening quarter approached when the Cargin mid fielder launched a high delivery from a 50 metre free into the danger area and the leather ended in the net to put his side ahead.

The Whiterock road side responded in the second quarter to a couple of points raised by the fair haired Gribbin with a couple of points from the impressive Tomas Adams and one from James Wilson to close the gap to the minimum.

Cargin had the last say however and when Jack Harney was denied by Johnnie’s net mender Brendan Downey, Callum Gribbin was on hand to return the leather to the back of the net and ensure a four point lead 2-04 to 0-06 at the short whistle.

The visitors started the second half with an early point from Tomas Adams but an indiscretion on the advancing Jack Harney was punished when Callum Gribbin sent the placed effort between the posts.

The visitors pressed as the second half progressed but the home defence stood tall and when Jack O’ Neill’s pin point delivery found Callum Gribbin he added another point.

St. John’s, led by the hard working Tomas Adams pressed forward and Corey Darragh had the last say in the third quarter with a long range point with the Cargin lads still in charge with a 2-06 to 0-08 advantage.

The home side started the final quarter with a four point lead but that was not to last and when a long range Corey Darragh effort eluded the Cargin rear guard to finish in the back of the net their advantage was reduced to the minimum at 2-06 to 1-08.

It was as close as they got however and Jack O’ Neill made a timelu interception before placing Callum Gribbin to forward between the posts and secure a hard earned 2-07 to 1-08 winning verdict and a place for his team in the semis.
