Ulster Colleges Hurling – Leonard Cup
St Killian’s 7-15 St Pat’s Maghera 2-6
Three goals and four points from full forward Oran McCambridge helped steer St Killian’s Garron Tower to the final of the Leonard Cup at Quinn Park Ballymena on Monday afternoon. The big Ruairi Og man, who was back in action after a long lay-off through injury, was in sparkling form and two goals from him inside a minute during the first quarter had the Tower boys in complete control.
St Pat’s had finished tops in the Leonard Cup qualifying rounds last week (beating the Tower in the process) and when they went ahead on two minutes thanks to a brilliant goal from Jack McCloy it looked like they would live up to their favourites tag. However goals from Fintan McKillop and two from McCambridge turned the game on its head and by half time they were 5-6 to 1-3 to the good, the other two goals coming from Thomas McLaughlin.
A goal two minutes into the second half by team captain Callagh Mooney all but ended the game as a contest and though St Pat’s pulled a couple of points back through Nial Collins and Cathal McKaigue another goal from Thomas McLaughlin left no doubt St Killian’s were bound for the final.
